This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.

The one named Moshe (⁨מֹשֶׁה⁩, Mosheh, “drawn out”) is set as elohim before Pharaoh, while Aaron becomes the voice through which that authority speaks.

Authority here is relational: Moses stands as elohim to Pharaoh, and Aaron is his prophet. What Moses bears before Pharaoh reaches Pharaoh through Aaron’s speech. The one drawn out now occupies a place before the ruler.

נְתַתִּיךָ

natattikha

GROWS FROM

נתן

n-t-n

To give, set, or place.

“set you as God” in this verse is natattikha. The English “made” can sound like Moses undergoes a change of being, while ⁨נתן⁩ (natan, “give, set, place”) also carries the sense of being assigned a role. Moses is placed as elohim toward Pharaoh; his name, Moshe (⁨מֹשֶׁה⁩, Mosheh, “drawn out”), adds the image of someone brought from one place into another.

ALSO GROWS

natan: To give, set, or place.

נָתַן

The root verb makes the act of appointing or placing visible beneath “made.”

mattanah: Gift.

מַתָּנָה

This branch carries the root’s sense of something given, illuminating Moses’ role as something entrusted to him.

nathun: Given or placed.

נָתוּן

This form keeps the focus on a position received rather than a nature produced.

נָבִיא

navi

GROWS FROM

נבא

n-b-ʾ

To speak or proclaim prophetically.

“prophet” in this verse is navi. Aaron’s role is not only to predict what is coming: he is Moses’ navi, the speaking voice attached to Moses’ authority. Exodus 4:16 makes this connection concrete by calling Aaron Moses’ “mouth.”

ALSO GROWS

nevuah: Prophecy.

נְבוּאָה

The noun names the prophetic speech that carries the message.

hitnabbe: To prophesy.

הִתְנַבֵּא

This verb shows the prophet’s role as one who speaks the message.

אֱלֹהִים

elohim

GROWS FROM

אל

El

The divine or mighty one; a word-family for God and divinity.

Elohim has a plural form and a wider range than a single English label: it can name God or divine beings and authorities. Here, “to Pharaoh” places Moses in a relation of authority while the word retains its divine force.

ALSO GROWS

El: God, mighty one.

אֵל

This related form keeps divine power and might audible within the title.

Eloah: God or deity.

אֱלוֹהַּ

This related form shows the same divine-word family in a singular form.

Authority is carried through appointed representatives whose speech bears the words entrusted to them.

And he will speak for you to the people, and he will be to you as a mouth, and you will be to him as God.
Exodus 4:16 · SDVAaron is Moses’ mouth, showing authority and speech moving through a representative.

Numbers 12:6 · SDVThe prophet receives words that carry the speaker’s message.
So we are sent in the place of the Anointed One, as though God were urging you through us. We beg you in his place. Be exchanged back to God.
2 Corinthians 5:20 · SDVAn ambassador speaks as a representative, carrying another’s appeal.
Before I shaped you in the belly, I knew you; and before you came out of the womb, I set you apart, and I gave you to the nations as a prophet.
Jeremiah 1:5 · SDV

The Hebrew verb behind “ordained thee” is ⁨נתן⁩ (natan, “give, set, place”), the same root as “I have made thee” here. Jeremiah pairs that placement with ⁨נָבִיא⁩ (navi, “prophet”), making explicit the movement from appointment into a voice-bearing role.
