This verse in the King James

King James wording
There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof.

The prophets’ conspiracy is a binding together that turns the living people entrusted to them into prey.

Trusted voices can bind themselves into a predatory force inside the very community they serve. The violence reaches whole living people and the material ground of life: people are consumed, wealth is seized, and widows multiply. The verse speaks now wherever authority feeds on those entrusted to it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a religious voice is safe simply because it bears a sacred role: authority can join the predator.

קֶשֶׁר

qesher

GROWS FROM

קשר

to bind or tie together

“knot” in this verse is qesher. The word for conspiracy carries the image of a binding: these prophets are joined in a shared act. The verse shows what that bond produces, a coordinated force that consumes the people around it.

ALSO GROWS

qāshar: to bind, tie

קָשַׁר

The verb names the action beneath the noun’s image of a joined group.

qesher: a bond, league, or conspiracy

קֶשֶׁר

In this verse, the binding becomes a coordinated conspiracy among the prophets.

נֶפֶשׁ

nefesh

GROWS FROM

נפש

the living self or person; life as a whole being

“living souls” in this verse is nefesh. Nefesh holds the person as a living whole: self, life, person. So the prophets consume people themselves, not some detached inner part; the root makes the violence concrete and intimate.

ALSO GROWS

nefesh: living soul, person, self

נֶפֶשׁ

This is the word in the verse: the prey being consumed are living people.

naphash: to rest or refresh oneself

נָפַשׁ

This related verb keeps the word family close to lived, embodied life.

When leaders entrusted with care bind their power to appetite, the people they should sustain become food and spoil.

You eat the fat, and you clothe yourselves with the wool. You slaughter the fattened ones, but you do not feed the flock.
Ezekiel 34:3 · SDVThe shepherds consume the flock’s resources while withholding the care their role requires.
Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who make my people wander, who bite with their teeth and cry out, Wholeness. And against whoever does not set something into their mouths, they set apart war.
Micah 3:5 · SDVThe prophets turn their appetite into a weapon against the people they claim to guide.
who devour widows' houses, and for show make long prayers. These will receive greater judgment.
Mark 12:40 · SDVReligious display accompanies the consumption of vulnerable people’s homes and security.
You eat the fat, and you clothe yourselves with the wool. You slaughter the fattened ones, but you do not feed the flock.
Ezekiel 34:3 · SDV

Both verses use ⁨אכל⁩ (ʾākhal, “eat”): here the prophets eat the living people; there the shepherds eat from the flock while refusing to feed it. The repeated root exposes the same mechanism: entrusted leaders consume what they are meant to sustain.
