This verse in the King James

King James wording
And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels, and the Ammonites a couchingplace for flocks: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

The judgment changes a city’s purpose so completely that its new life as animal ground becomes the way its people perceive the LORD.

Rabbah is given over as camel ground, and the Ammonites become a resting place for flocks: the loss is physical and stark. The changed landscape becomes a witness through which the addressed people know, perceive by encounter, who the LORD is.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A city’s greatness and settled place do not guarantee permanence; Rabbah’s name does not protect it from becoming pasture.

וְנָתַתִּי

venatatti

GROWS FROM

נתן

To give, set, or place.

“give” in this verse is venatatti. The verb carries the sense of giving or setting a place to a new use. Judgment here is a transfer of function: Rabbah is placed as camel ground, and the Ammonites as a resting place for flocks.

ALSO GROWS

natan: gave, set, or placed

נָתַן

In Genesis 1:17, God sets the lights in the heavens; the same root can describe placing something into its appointed position.

natatti: I have given

נָתַתִּי

In Genesis 1:29, God says, “Behold, I have given you every herb,” showing the root’s sense of conferring or assigning.

מִרְבַּץ

mirbats

GROWS FROM

רבץ

To lie down or crouch.

“place to lie down” in this verse is mirbats. The root joins the flock’s resting place to the bodily action of lying down or crouching. A city reduced to this place is defined by repose for animals, while the same root can describe a threat crouched at a threshold.

ALSO GROWS

rovetz: crouches or lies down

רֹבֵץ

In Genesis 4:7, missing crouches at the door; the same posture word appears in a very different setting here.

rovtzim: lying down

רֹבְצִים

In Genesis 29:2, flocks are lying by a well, echoing the ordinary animal rest that now defines Ammon’s fate.

וִידַעְתֶּם

vidaʿtem

GROWS FROM

ידע

To know, recognize, or perceive through encounter.

“perceive” in this verse is vidaʿtem. The knowing at the end is more than receiving information: the root also speaks of intimate knowing and recognition. The altered land itself becomes an encounter through which the LORD is perceived.

ALSO GROWS

vayyedaʿ: knew

וַיֵּדַע

Genesis 4:1 uses this root for Adam knowing Eve, showing its capacity for direct, intimate encounter.

deʿah: knowledge

דֵּעָה

Isaiah 11:9 speaks of the knowledge of the LORD filling the earth, extending this root from personal knowing to recognition of God.

When judgment removes a city’s human order, the place becomes a dwelling for creatures, making its collapse visible.

Therefore, look, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will sound the war-shout against Rabbah of the children of Ammon. It shall become an emptied heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire. Then Israel shall take hold of those who took hold of him, says the LORD.
Jeremiah 49:2 · SDVRabbah’s desolation makes the loss of its human order visible in the same city named in Ezekiel.
Flocks shall lie down in her midst, all the beasts of the nations, and the pelican and the porcupine shall lodge in her capitals. Their voice shall sing in the windows, and dry ruin in the thresholds, for he has laid bare the cedar.
Zephaniah 2:14 · SDVA city’s rooms and thresholds become places for flocks and wild creatures, just as Ammon becomes a resting place for flocks.
And he cried out with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great has fallen, has fallen, and has become the place where demons settle, and the holding place of every unclean breath, and the holding place of every unclean and hated bird.
Revelation 18:2 · SDVBabylon’s collapse is shown through what inhabits it afterward: the fallen city becomes a dwelling and a cage for creatures.
If you do well, will you not be lifted up? And if you do not do well, falling short crouches at the door. Its reaching is toward you, and you shall rule over it.
Genesis 4:7 · SDV

The Hebrew root ⁨רבץ⁩ (ravats, “lie down or crouch”) appears here as sin lying at the door and in Ezekiel as the root of the flock’s resting place. One root holds both the crouched threat at a threshold and the animals resting in a ruined city.
