What Does Ezekiel 31:15 Mean?

Thus says the Lord LORD. On the day when he went down to the grave, I caused mourning. I covered the deep over him and held back its rivers, and the great waters were held back. I darkened Lebanon over him, and all the trees of the field grew faint for him.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him.

The verse makes grief cosmic: the deep is covered, the waters are held back, and the landscape itself mourns the descent.

A descent into the grave reaches beyond the one who falls: the deep is covered, the floods are restrained, Lebanon mourns, and field trees faint. The created world carries grief in its waters and living things, so this loss is not sealed inside one life.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie undone is that death or collapse touches only the person who falls; here the waters and trees also bear its force.

הֶאֱבַלְתִּי

heʾevaltî

GROWS FROM

אבל

Mourn, grieve, or languish; in this form, cause mourning.

“I caused mourning” in this verse is heʾevaltî. The same root describes land mourning elsewhere, so grief here is not confined to a person. The verse gives the created world its own expression of loss.

ALSO GROWS

ʾāvlāh: Mourns or grieves.

אָבְלָה

Isaiah uses the same root for the earth itself, echoing the landscape’s grief here.

teʾeval: Mourns or grieves.

תֶּאֱבַל

Hosea uses the root for the land mourning among its plants and creatures, again making grief part of the living world.

וָאֶמְנַע

vaʾemnaʿ

GROWS FROM

מנע

Hold back, withhold, or prevent.

“restrained” in this verse is vaʾemnaʿ. The waters are stopped through an act of holding back. The same root can describe withholding something harmful or withholding something good; the object and setting give the restraint its force.

ALSO GROWS

mānaʿ: Held back or kept from reaching someone.

מָנַע

Genesis uses the root for what is withheld from the womb, showing the same verb can name a profound deprivation.

yimnaʿ: Hold back or keep from giving.

יִמְנַע

Psalm 84:11 uses the same root for withholding no good thing, showing how context changes the force of restraint.

כִּסִּיתִי

kissîtî

GROWS FROM

כסה

Cover, conceal, or clothe.

The same verb can describe waters hiding the heights and a person’s missing being covered. Here the deep is concealed from view; the verse does not say it ceases to exist.

ALSO GROWS

waykussū: Were hidden beneath a covering.

וַיְכֻסּוּ

Genesis 7:19 uses the same root as floodwaters cover the high hills, linking this covered deep with waters that hide what was visible.

kesuy: Concealed beneath a covering.

כְּסוּי

Psalm 32:1 uses the root for a person’s missing being covered, extending the word from hidden depths to what is hidden in a life.

The created world is shown registering human collapse through its own mourning, withering, and groaning.

How long will the land mourn, and the green things of every field dry up, because of the harm of those who settle in it? The beasts are swept away, and the birds, because they say, He will not see our last end.
Jeremiah 12:4 · SDVThe land, plants, beasts, and birds bear the effects of human wickedness in their own decline.
The earth mourns and withers, the world languishes and withers away, and the heights of the people of the earth droop.
Isaiah 24:4 · SDVThe earth and world mourn and fade alongside the people whose collapse the verse names.
For we know that the whole creation groans together and labors together in the pangs of birth until now.
Romans 8:22 · SDVThe whole creation shares an ongoing groaning, making suffering larger than the individual.
For the LORD God is sun and shield. The LORD gives favor and weight. He will hold back no good from those who walk in wholeness.
Psalm 84:11 · SDV

The verb for restraining here and the verb translated “withhold” there share ⁨מנע⁩ (mānaʿ), “hold back or withhold.” The shared root shows the act itself; what is being held back gives that act its force.
