This verse in the King James

King James wording
Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbour’s wife: and shall ye possess the land?

They stand on a sword and still ask whether the land is theirs to inherit.

A foothold secured by force does not make the land a rightful inheritance. When you violate a neighbor’s marriage and practice abomination, the shared ground is defiled, and possession becomes a question rather than a guarantee.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Having power over a place does not prove that it is rightfully yours to possess.

תִּירָשׁוּ

tîrāšû

GROWS FROM

ירש

y-r-sh

To inherit or take possession; in the causative stem, to dispossess or drive out.

“take hold of” in this verse is tîrāšû. The word for possessing the land belongs to a root that can also describe dispossessing others. The question of inheritance is therefore bound up with what it takes from those who are driven out.

ALSO GROWS

yāraš: Inherit, take possession

יָרַשׁ

This is the verb behind the question about claiming the land.

hôrîš: Dispossess, drive out

הוֹרִישׁ

The causative form shows the other side of taking possession: someone may be forced from what they hold.

môrāšāh: Possession, inheritance

מוֹרָשָׁה

This noun makes clear that the root concerns both what is inherited and what is held.

עֲמַדְתֶּם

ʿămadtem

GROWS FROM

עמד

ʿ-m-d

To stand, remain, or take a position.

The verse gives their stance a literal footing: they stand upon a sword. The same root can form a word for a position or station, so the image places their claim to the land on a posture of violence.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāmad: Stand, remain

עָמַד

This is the verb used for their posture upon the sword.

maʿămād: Position, station

מַעֲמָד

This branch sharpens the link between where they stand and the position they claim.

טִמֵּאתֶם

ṭimmēʾtem

GROWS FROM

טמא

ṭ-m-ʾ

To become unclean or to render something unclean.

“defile” in this verse is ṭimmēʾtem. The verb names an act that produces the condition also named by this root. The verse places the defiling of a neighbor’s wife beside the question of possessing the land, tying private violation to the ground they inhabit.

ALSO GROWS

ṭāmēʾ: Unclean

טָמֵא

This describes the state associated with the act of defiling.

ṭumʾāh: Uncleanness, impurity

טֻמְאָה

This noun names the condition the verb brings about.

Scripture treats inheritance as inseparable from conduct that preserves or defiles communal life.

And the land is soiled. Therefore I visit its crookedness upon it, and the land itself vomits out those who settle in her.
Leviticus 18:25 · SDVThe land itself rejects the defilement brought into it by its inhabitants.
For the evildoers will be cut off, and those stretched toward the LORD will inherit the land.
Psalm 37:9 · SDVThe contrast joins inheritance of the earth with a way of life distinct from evildoing.
Have you not seen that the unaligned will not inherit the governance of God? Do not wander. Neither the sellers of bodies, nor the image-servers, nor adulterers, nor the soft ones, nor those who lie in the beds of males.
1 Corinthians 6:9 · SDVThe verse directly places adultery and other violations beside the question of inheritance.
Son of man, when the house of Israel settled in their own land, they defiled it by their way and by their doings. Their way was before me like the uncleanness of a removed woman.
Ezekiel 36:17 · SDV

This verse uses the same ⁨טמא⁩ root for defiling the land through one’s way and deeds. It makes explicit the bond Ezekiel 33:26 compresses: conduct reaches the ground people inhabit and shapes their claim to possess it.
