This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

The Hebrew says, in effect, “the word of the LORD happened to me,” so revelation here is an event of address, not a message kept at a distance.

The verse reaches you with a word that arrives as address: it does not remain a thought detached from life, but takes form in what is spoken. The opening formula makes the message that follows something you can hear now, not distant information.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a word from God is merely information; here, the word is something that happens to the one who receives it.

וַיְהִי

wayhî

GROWS FROM

היה

h-y-h

To be, become, or happen.

The form ⁨וַיְהִי⁩ (wayhî) comes from ⁨היה⁩ (h-y-h), “to be, become, happen”; the line begins, in effect, “and it was or happened: the word of the LORD to me.” This gives “came” an event-like shade: the word is what happens to the speaker, not only information that travels.

ALSO GROWS

hāyâ: Was, became, happened

הָיָה

Its range makes the verse’s “came” carry the sense of an event coming to be.

yihyeh: Will be, will happen

יִהְיֶה

This form makes the root’s sense of being or happening visible across time.

דְּבַר

devar

GROWS FROM

דבר

d-b-r

To speak; a spoken word or matter.

⁨דָּבָר⁩ (dāḇār) can name a spoken word and a matter or thing; the same root gives the verb ⁨דִּבֵּר⁩ (dibbēr), “to speak.” English “word” can sound like a string of language, while Hebrew keeps the word bound to the matter it speaks.

ALSO GROWS

dibbēr: He spoke; to speak

דִּבֵּר

The noun “word” and the act of speaking grow from the same root.

devarim: Words, matters, things

דְּבָרִים

This plural preserves the range between what is spoken and the matter being spoken of.

Scripture presents the divine word as an address that reaches someone and acts upon what hears it.

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Jeremiah 1:4 · SDVLike Ezekiel’s opening, the word arrives as a direct address to the one who receives it.
For the word of God is living and working, and sharper than any two-edged sword, reaching through even to the dividing of living soul and breath, of joints and marrow, and it separates the inward movements and thoughts of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12 · SDVThe word is described as living and active, reaching into what is hidden within a person.
Again he said to me, Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear and respond to the word of the LORD.
Ezekiel 37:4 · SDV

The same ⁨דָּבָר⁩ (dāḇār, “word; matter”) that opens Ezekiel 34:1 is spoken directly to dry bones here. The next lines show life answering that word, making its arrival feel like the beginning of an event.
