This verse in the King James

King James wording
For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

The repeated “I” makes the search itself personal: the Shepherd’s attention reaches into the scattered places.

When you feel scattered, this verse says God is already seeking you and looking closely for you. The doubled “I” makes the care personal; your return does not begin with your ability to find the way back but with God’s attention.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that being lost means being unseen, or that you must find your way back before God comes looking.

וְדָרַשְׁתִּי

wəḏārašti

GROWS FROM

דרש

⁨דָּרַשׁ⁩ (dāraš): to seek, inquire, or require.

This root can mean seeking, inquiring, or requiring, meanings English often separates. Here the first-person form makes the search God’s own deliberate action, directed toward the sheep.

ALSO GROWS

dāraš: seek or inquire

דָּרַשׁ

The same verb appears in “I sought the LORD” (Psalm 34:4), showing seeking as active pursuit.

midrāš: inquiry or exposition

מִדְרָשׁ

This branch carries the sense of searching into careful examination and interpretation.

וּבִקַּרְתִּים

ūḇiqqartîm

GROWS FROM

בקר

⁨בָּקַר⁩ (bāqar): to inspect, examine, or search out.

“look them over” in this verse is ūḇiqqartîm. The root can carry the sense of looking over or examining closely. The shepherd’s search is attentive care, not distant awareness; the same verb returns in the next verse as the shepherd seeks out the scattered flock.

ALSO GROWS

yəḇaqēr: he seeks out or examines

יְבַקֵּר

In Ezekiel 34:12, the shepherd uses this same root to search among the scattered sheep.

yəḇaqərénnū: he examines it

יְבַקְּרֶנּוּ

Leviticus 27:33 uses this root for searching whether an animal is good or bad, exposing the close inspection within “seek them out.”

A shepherd’s care moves toward the scattered and missing, seeking until the flock is gathered.

He feeds his flock like a shepherd, gathers the lambs in his arm, carries them against his chest, and gently leads the ones who nurse.
Isaiah 40:11 · SDVThe shepherd gathers and carries the vulnerable ones close, making care an action that reaches toward them.
What man among you, holding a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness and go after the one that has lost its way until he finds it?
Luke 15:4 · SDVThe shepherd goes after the missing sheep and continues seeking until it is found.
As a shepherd looks over his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered, so I will look over my sheep. I will snatch them out of every place where they were scattered in the day of cloud and thick darkness.
Ezekiel 34:12 · SDV

The next verse repeats the root ⁨בקר⁩ (bāqar, inspect or search out) in the image of a shepherd among scattered sheep. The search becomes close attention within the very places where the flock is dispersed.
