King James wording
King James Version
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the heathen, and against all Idumea, which have appointed my land into their possession with the joy of all their heart, with despiteful minds, to cast it out for a prey.THE KEY
The verse makes the conflict a contest over whose claim can name the land an inheritance: the LORD’s fierce claim or the nations’ joyful seizure.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks wherever power calls possession an inheritance while treating another’s land as spoil. The LORD’s fire of jealousy answers that renaming: celebration and certainty do not settle whose land it is. Edom’s name means “red” (אֱדוֹם, Edom) and shares its consonants with “ground” or “soil” (אֲדָמָה, adamah), joining the named claimant and the contested land in one sound-family.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A people’s certainty, joy, or power to assign land does not make that land theirs.
THE ROOT
מוֹרָשָׁה
morashah
GROWS FROM
י־ר־שׁ
To possess or inherit; in its causative form, to dispossess or drive out.
The word for possession belongs to a root family that also names driving someone else out. The English can make inheritance sound like a settled state; the Hebrew keeps the gaining and loss of possession in view together.
ALSO GROWS
yarash: Inherit or take possession.
יָרַשׁ
This is the verb beneath the land being treated as an inheritance.
horish: Dispossess or drive out.
הוֹרִישׁ
The causative form shows the other side of gaining possession: someone can be made to lose the land.
קִנְאָה
qin'ah
GROWS FROM
ק־נ־א
Zeal or jealousy: ardent intensity.
This word holds jealousy and zeal together as a heated intensity. Paired with “fire,” it presents the LORD’s speech as a forceful defense of a claim against the nations’ joyous claim to the land.
ALSO GROWS
qanna: Jealous or zealous.
קַנָּא
The adjective shows the same root describing the one who bears this ardent quality.
leqanne: To act with zeal or jealousy.
לְקַנֵּא
The verb makes the root’s intensity active, rather than merely a feeling.
אֱדוֹם
Edom
GROWS FROM
א־ד־ם
Red; the related word adamah means ground or soil.
“Idumea” in this verse is Edom. Edom’s name carries the color red, while its consonants echo adamah, “ground” or “soil.” The name and the contested land meet within the same sound-family.
ALSO GROWS
adom: Red.
אָדֹם
This color word gives the name Edom its familiar meaning.
adamah: Ground or soil.
אֲדָמָה
The shared consonants connect Edom’s name with the land at the center of the verse.
THE PATTERN
No human claim makes the land independent of its prior belonging to the LORD.
The land shall not be sold for good, for the land is mine; for you are sojourners and those who settle beside me.A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD's, and what fills it; the inhabited world, and those who settle in it.But when those who work the soil saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and hold his inheritance.THE THREAD
Thus says the Lord GOD, because the enemy has said against you, Aha, the ancient heights are ours as a possession.Ezekiel 36:2 and 36:5 use the same Hebrew noun מוֹרָשָׁה (morashah, possession or inheritance), from יָרַשׁ (yarash, possess or inherit). The repeated word turns the enemy’s boast into the exact claim the LORD answers here: the issue is who can call the land an inheritance.
