King James wording
King James Version
The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,THE KEY
In Hebrew, “word” can also mean “matter” or “thing,” so God’s speech arrives as the reality it names.
THE MEANING
This verse presents God’s word as an address that arrives with a matter, not as detached information. The word meets you now in the act of saying, and the next line gives that speech a visible form in two pieces of wood. Its arrival opens movement from separation toward joining.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that a word from God is only information about something else; here, it arrives as the matter itself.
THE ROOT
דָּבָר
dāḇār
GROWS FROM
ד־ב־ר
d-b-r
To speak; as a noun, what is spoken or the matter at hand.
The verse opens with וַיְהִי (wayhî, and it was or came to be) before דָּבָר (dāḇār, word or matter): the word is not just a sentence arriving to Ezekiel, but the matter coming to be present with him. The speaking form and the noun keep speech and event on the same branch.
ALSO GROWS
dāḇār: Word; matter, affair, thing.
דָּבָר
One noun holds both spoken language and the matter under discussion, so “the word” is also the arriving matter.
dibber: Spoke; speak.
דִּבֵּר
The verb names the act of speaking from the same root, linking the word that arrives with active speech.
THE PATTERN
God’s word is presented as active speech that brings reality into view and movement.
For he says, and it comes to be; he commands, and it stands. All things came to be through him, and apart from him not one thing came to be that has come to be.For the word of God is living and working, and sharper than any two-edged sword, reaching through even to the dividing of living soul and breath, of joints and marrow, and it separates the inward movements and thoughts of the heart.THE THREAD
After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, Do not fear, Abram. I am your shield, and your very great wages. Both verses use דְּבַר־יְהוָה (devar-YHWH, the word of the LORD) with וַיְהִי (wayhî, and it was or came to be) and לֵאמֹר (lēʾmōr, saying). In Genesis, the arriving word names Abram’s shield and reward; here, it opens the joining of what is divided.
