King James wording
King James Version
My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.THE KEY
The tabernacle is God’s dwelling taking root with the people, so presence and belonging arrive as one promise.
THE MEANING
The promise holds God’s nearness and your belonging together: God dwells with the people and is their God. You are named among the people who belong to God.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that you must cross a distance to earn divine nearness: the promise places God’s own dwelling with the people.
THE ROOT
מִשְׁכָּנִי
mishkani
GROWS FROM
שכן
sh-k-n
To dwell, settle, or remain in a place.
“tent” in this verse is mishkani. “Tabernacle” carries the act of dwelling within the word: it is not merely a sacred object but a place where presence settles. The same root also names a neighbor as one who dwells nearby, linking God’s dwelling with the people to nearness and shared place.
ALSO GROWS
shakan: Dwell, settle, remain.
שָׁכַן
This is the root’s verb: the tabernacle is where dwelling takes place, and the verse promises that this dwelling is with the people.
shakhen: Neighbor, one who dwells nearby.
שָׁכֵן
The neighbor is defined by nearness of dwelling; the verse describes God’s presence in that same language of shared place.
THE PATTERN
God’s dwelling among people makes divine nearness the ground of their belonging.
And let them make me a set-apart place, that I may pitch my tent among them. And the word became flesh and pitched a tent among us, and we beheld his weight, the weight as of the only-born from the Father, full of favor and truth. And I hear a great voice from the throne, saying, Look, the tent of God is with humankind, and he will pitch his tent among them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.THE THREAD
And let them make me a set-apart place, that I may pitch my tent among them.“Dwell” here is שָׁכַן (shakan), the root inside מִשְׁכָּן (mishkan), “tabernacle.” The root makes the connection plain: the tabernacle is named for God dwelling among the people.
