This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

The work can stop without its purpose being erased: it is halted in Jerusalem, whose name carries wholeness.

The pause is real, and the sentence gives it a limit: “until.” The work stops, but the stoppage does not erase its purpose; the house is unfinished while its destination remains wholeness. For the reader now, interruption is a season the work can inhabit without becoming its final verdict.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that when the work stops, its purpose has ended.

בְּטֵלַת

bĕṭēlat

GROWS FROM

ב־ט־ל

To cease, stop, or bring to a halt.

“stood idle” in this verse is bĕṭēlat. The same root names both the work’s cessation here and the act of making it cease elsewhere in the passage. The wording reveals a halt imposed on the work, not proof that the work has lost its purpose.

ALSO GROWS

bĕṭēlat: It ceased.

בְּטֵלַת

This is the form used for the work’s stoppage in this verse.

lĕvaṭṭālāh: To cause to cease.

לְבַטָּלָה

This related form appears in Ezra 4:21, where a command is given to stop the work, exposing the pause as something imposed.

עֲבִידַת

ʿăḇîḏaṯ

GROWS FROM

ע־ב־ד

To work, do, or serve.

The work at the house is also service: the root joins doing with serving. What is halted is not only construction, but the ongoing act of service associated with the house.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāḇaḏ: To work or serve.

עָבַד

It shows that the stopped work also carries the sense of service.

ʿeḇeḏ: Servant.

עֶבֶד

This related form connects the work to the one who serves.

יְרוּשָׁלַיִם

Yerushalayim

GROWS FROM

ש־ל־ם

Wholeness, completeness.

“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim carries shalom, wholeness, within its name. The house can stand unfinished while the name of the place still holds the wholeness toward which the work is directed.

ALSO GROWS

shalom: Wholeness.

שָׁלוֹם

This is the familiar word carried within the place name, placing the interrupted work in the language of wholeness.

shalem: Whole, complete.

שָׁלֵם

This related form makes completion part of the same root family.

A visible pause does not decide the final state of work that remains open toward completion.

But the eye of their God was upon the gray-headed ones of the Jews, and they did not halt them, until the decree came to Darius, and then they would return an answer by letter concerning this.
Ezra 5:5 · SDVThe same work that is stopped in Ezra 4:24 is now beyond the power of others to stop.
And the gray-haired ones of the Jews built, and they broke through by the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they built and made it whole, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.
Ezra 6:14 · SDVThe interrupted building reaches completion, showing that the pause is not the work’s last state.
Being confident of this very thing, that the one who began a good work in you will finish it until the day of Jesus the Anointed One.
Philippians 1:6 · SDVThe work’s completion remains in view across time, even while it is still underway.
But the eye of their God was upon the gray-headed ones of the Jews, and they did not halt them, until the decree came to Darius, and then they would return an answer by letter concerning this.
Ezra 5:5 · SDV

The root ⁨ב־ט־ל⁩, meaning to cease or stop, links the two verses: here the work ceases, while in Ezra 5:5 others cannot cause it to cease. The same root marks both the imposed pause and the point where that stoppage no longer holds.
