This verse in the King James

King James wording
We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

The line draws an ethnic boundary, then its unfinished sentence carries that boundary into the question of what aligns anyone with God.

The line gives inherited belonging a voice: “we” are Jews by nature, while the Gentiles stand under the label “sinners.” The sentence moves straight on, so that distinction does not settle the deeper question of alignment with God. It speaks now wherever a group’s identity seems to place its members beyond the condition assigned to outsiders.

ἁμαρτωλοί

hamartōloi

GROWS FROM

ἁμαρτάνω

hamartanō

To miss or err.

“those who miss the mark” in this verse is hamartōloi. The Greek label belongs to the same word family as missing or erring. English can make “sinners” sound like a fixed kind of person; the root keeps visible the condition of missing, which the next line can turn back onto “we ourselves.”

ALSO GROWS

hamartia: Missing; commonly rendered “sin.”

ἁμαρτία

This noun shares the word family behind “sinners,” revealing the connection between the person labeled and the condition named.

hamartēma: A fault, error, or act of missing.

ἁμάρτημα

This branch keeps the root’s sense of missing visible as an event or condition, rather than only as a label for a group.

Scripture keeps reopening the boundary between native belonging and outsider status, extending shared regard across it.

But the sojourner who sojourns with you shall be to you as one who springs up among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.
Leviticus 19:34 · SDVThe stranger is brought within the circle of belonging rather than left outside it.
Then Peter opened his mouth and said, In truth I have laid hold of this, that God lifts no one's face.
Acts 10:34 · SDVThe verse makes divine regard cross the distinctions people use to sort one another.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither servant nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Jesus the Anointed One.
Galatians 3:28 · SDVInherited and social distinctions no longer determine who belongs within the shared life named here.
But if, while we seek to be aligned in the Anointed One, we ourselves too are found to be those who miss the mark, is the Anointed One then a servant of falling short? May it never come to be!
Galatians 2:17 · SDV

The same Greek word family returns for “sinners,” but now the label can fall on “we ourselves” as well. What this line places on the other side of the boundary cannot stay there.
