This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

The plea for Ishmael’s life carries a hidden echo: his name means “God hears,” the truth the next verse makes explicit.

A loved life that seems outside the central promise is still brought before God, with no demand for status, only the plea that it live in God’s presence. The next verse answers that Ishmael is heard and blessed, even as the covenant is named through Isaac.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a life outside a particular promise is outside God’s hearing: Ishmael is heard, blessed, and given a future.

Yishma'el

GROWS FROM

שמע

sh-m-ʿ

“live” in this verse is yichyeh. Paired with “before thee,” this verb reaches beyond bare survival: it asks for Ishmael’s ongoing life in God’s presence. The related forms for “living” and “life” grow from the same seed, holding the person and the life close together.

Genesis 17:20 · SDV

Ishmael (⁨יִשְׁמָעֵאל⁩, Yishma’el, “God hears”) carries the root ⁨שמע⁩ (shama, hear/listen), which appears again in “I have heard thee.” The answer turns Abraham’s plea into a future for Ishmael: he is heard, blessed, and promised fruitfulness.
