This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The plea for Ishmael’s life carries a hidden echo: his name means “God hears,” the truth the next verse makes explicit.

A loved life that seems outside the central promise is still brought before God, with no demand for status, only the plea that it live in God’s presence. The next verse answers that Ishmael is heard and blessed, even as the covenant is named through Isaac.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a life outside a particular promise is outside God’s hearing: Ishmael is heard, blessed, and given a future.

יִשְׁמָעֵאל

Yishma'el

GROWS FROM

שמע

sh-m-ʿ

Hear, listen, heed.

“Ishmael” in this verse is Yishma'el. The name means “God hears.” The next verse repeats the same root when God says, “I have heard thee,” so the plea already resonates with an answer.

ALSO GROWS

shama: Hear, listen.

שָׁמַע

This verb is the seed within Ishmael’s name and returns in God’s answer to Abraham.

shemu'ah: A report, something heard.

שְׁמֻעָה

This branch shows hearing becoming a message, the answer to Abraham’s plea is spoken aloud.

יִחְיֶה

yichyeh

GROWS FROM

חיה

ḥ-y-h

Live, be alive, continue in life.

“live” in this verse is yichyeh. Paired with “before thee,” this verb reaches beyond bare survival: it asks for Ishmael’s ongoing life in God’s presence. The related forms for “living” and “life” grow from the same seed, holding the person and the life close together.

ALSO GROWS

ḥay: Living, alive.

חַי

This adjective turns the plea into a wish for Ishmael to remain among the living.

ḥayyim: Life, living existence.

חַיִּים

This noun carries the same seed into the idea of life itself, the heart of Abraham’s request.

Scripture locates life in relation to God: before God, in God, and as a gift from God.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
Psalm 16:11 · KJVThe path of life opens into God’s presence, where joy is full.
For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
Acts 17:28 · KJVLiving itself is described as happening in God: life, movement, and being are held within him.
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
John 10:10 · KJVLife is something Jesus brings in abundance, extending beyond mere survival.
And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
Genesis 17:20 · KJV

Ishmael (⁨יִשְׁמָעֵאל⁩, Yishma’el, “God hears”) carries the root ⁨שמע⁩ (shama, hear/listen), which appears again in “I have heard thee.” The answer turns Abraham’s plea into a future for Ishmael: he is heard, blessed, and promised fruitfulness.
