This verse in the King James

King James wording
The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;

The river does not merely run beside Havilah: it goes around the whole land, placing its gold within the reach of its course.

You see Havilah through the river that encircles it: the whole land lies within the water’s reach, and gold is found there. The verse holds the river’s course and the land’s treasure together, so abundance appears within the river’s full circuit.

הַסֹּבֵב

hasōvēv

GROWS FROM

סבב

To turn or go around; by extension, to surround or encircle.

“encircles” in this verse is hasōvēv. The Hebrew presents an active circuit: the river goes around the entire land. The same root also appears in a word meaning “all around,” so the verse’s focus is the river’s reach around the whole place, with its gold inside that reach.

ALSO GROWS

sabab: To turn, go around, or surround.

סָבַב

This verb names the motion behind the river’s encircling course.

saviv: Around, all around.

סָבִיב

This spatial form carries the same root into the idea of a place encompassed on every side.

A river’s reach reveals what a place receives and holds.

And a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it was split and became four heads.
Genesis 2:10 · SDVThe river’s source becomes visible through the places its branching waters reach.
There is a river, whose channels make glad the city of God, the set-apart dwellings of the Most High.
Psalm 46:4 · SDVThe river’s streams reach the city and bring gladness within its bounds.
And he points out to me a clean river of the waters of life, bright as crystal, flowing out from the throne of God and of the Lamb.
Revelation 22:1 · SDVThe river flows from its source as water of life, revealing what its reach carries.
All nations circle me; in the nature of the LORD I cut them off.
Psalm 118:10 · SDV

The Hebrew root ⁨סבב⁩ (s-b-b; sabab), “to go around or surround,” describes both the river encircling Havilah and the nations surrounding the speaker. The shared root makes the image of encirclement clear; the surrounding force is different in each verse.
