This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying,

The root behind Abraham’s “stood up” also forms ⁨מָקוֹם⁩ (maqom), “place,” so his rise from his dead opens toward making a place for the dead.

The dead remain before you, and still your voice can return to the people around you. The next conversation begins within grief’s presence; speaking does not make the loss disappear.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that beginning a necessary conversation means you have left the dead behind or finished grieving.

וַיָּקָם

wayyāqom

GROWS FROM

קום

q-w-m

Rise, stand; in causative forms, raise or establish.

“rose” in this verse is wayyāqom. The verb translated “stood up” comes from ⁨קום⁩ (q-w-m), a root that also yields ⁨מָקוֹם⁩ (maqom), “place,” and forms meaning “establish.” Hebrew holds rising, place, and setting something in place in one root family: Abraham rises from before his dead and begins speaking toward securing a place for them.

ALSO GROWS

maqom: Place, location

מָקוֹם

The root of standing also names a place, linking Abraham’s rise to the place for the dead that his speech is about to seek.

heqim: Establish, set up

הֵקִים

To cause something to stand is to establish it; the same root carries Abraham’s bodily rising into the concrete work that follows.

Grief can remain present as the living rise into a next act of care, speech, or worship.

Then Job rose up, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell to the ground, and bowed down.
Job 1:20 · SDVJob’s rising and bodily mourning remain in one scene; his action does not undo the loss.
Then David rose from the ground, and washed, and oiled himself, and changed his garments, and came into the house of the LORD and bowed down. Then he came to his own house, and when he asked, they set bread before him, and he ate.
2 Samuel 12:20 · SDVDavid rises, tends his body, enters the house of the LORD, and eats while the loss remains real.
And on the first day of the week, in the deep of the dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared, and certain others with them.
Luke 24:1 · SDVThose who come to the tomb with spices enact care while carrying grief forward.
And I will make my covenant stand between me and you, and your seed after you in their generations, for a covenant of the ages, to be God to you and to your seed after you.
Genesis 17:7 · SDV

Genesis 23:3 uses ⁨וַיָּקָם⁩ (wayyāqom), from ⁨קום⁩ (q-w-m), “rise, stand”; the same root appears in ⁨הֵקִים⁩ (heqim), “establish,” in this promise. The root links Abraham’s rising here with what is set in place in the verse that promises an established covenant.
