This verse in the King James

King James wording
It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

Laban’s “hurt” and the forbidden “bad” are both ⁨רָע⁩ (raʿ, “evil or harm”), so one Hebrew word carries the threat from his hand into the speech he is told to withhold.

You may face someone with real capacity to harm you, while their power still has a boundary they do not set for themselves. Here that boundary is exact: Laban is warned not to speak with Jacob, whether the words are good or bad.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that someone able to harm you has unrestricted permission to say anything to you.

רָע

raʿ

GROWS FROM

רעע

To act badly or do harm.

“from good to bad” in this verse is raʿ. The same Hebrew word appears where Laban says he can do Jacob “hurt” and where the warning says “good or bad.” English gives it two shades, linking the harm he names with the badness he is forbidden to speak.

ALSO GROWS

raʿ: Bad, evil.

רַע

This is the word rendered “bad” at the end of the warning, and it is the same word behind Laban’s claim that he could do harm.

raʿaʿ: To act wickedly or do harm.

רָעַע

The verbal form makes the connection between doing harm and the word “bad” audible in the verse.

הִשָּׁמֶר

hishamer

GROWS FROM

שמר

To guard, keep, or watch.

“Guard yourself” in this verse is hishamer. The warning begins by telling Laban to guard himself before it names the speech he must avoid. The command places watchfulness around his words at the point where he might address Jacob.

ALSO GROWS

shomer: Keeper, guard.

שֹׁמֵר

This branch shows the root’s active sense of keeping watch, which is present in the warning to Laban.

mishmeret: Guard, charge, watch.

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

This branch can name something kept under watch, echoing the boundary the warning places around Laban’s speech.

מִדַּבֵּר

middabber

GROWS FROM

דבר

To speak; a word or matter.

“speak” in this verse is middabber. The root can name both speaking and a matter or thing. Here the command over speech sits beside the matter Laban raises: his capacity to do harm to Jacob.

ALSO GROWS

davar: Word, matter, thing.

דָּבָר

This noun shows how the root can hold speech and a matter in the same family.

dibber: He spoke.

דִּבֶּר

This verbal form makes clear that the warning directly concerns what Laban says to Jacob.

The power to harm may be real, yet it remains bounded by an authority beyond the one who holds it.

And the LORD said to the Adversary, Look, all that he has is in your hand; only toward him do not stretch out your hand. So the Adversary went out from the face of the LORD.
Job 1:12 · SDVThe adversary receives real reach over Job’s possessions, while the limit on his hand is stated plainly.
Surely the heat of man praises you; the remnant of heat you gird.
Psalm 76:10 · SDVEven the remainder of human anger is subject to restraint; its power does not become final.
Jesus answered, You would have no authority at all against me, unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you has a greater shortcoming.
John 19:11 · SDVHuman authority is real, yet the verse describes it as given from above rather than self-originating.
Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The word comes forth from the LORD; we cannot speak to you bad or good.
Genesis 24:50 · SDV

Laban and Bethuel say they cannot speak “bad or good” once the matter proceeds from the LORD; Genesis 31 repeats that same pair when Laban recalls the warning about Jacob. The echo lets the earlier wording illuminate this moment: Laban’s speech is not the final authority over the matter.
