King James wording
King James Version
And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.THE KEY
In Hebrew, “on this manner” and “speak” share the same root, so Jacob sends each company with a precise word for the encounter.
THE MEANING
You see a difficult meeting taking shape before the two brothers stand face to face: each company carries the same words toward Esau, ready to speak when it reaches him. The message is already moving through the space between them.
THE ROOT
דָּבָר
dāḇār
GROWS FROM
דבר
d-b-r
Word, matter; to speak.
“manner / speak” in this verse is dāḇār. The Hebrew says, in effect, “according to this word you shall speak”: “manner” and “speak” are forms of the same root. English separates the plan from the speech, while the Hebrew binds them into one carried word.
ALSO GROWS
dāḇār: Word, matter, or affair.
דָּבָר
This is the word translated “manner” in “on this manner”, the message each company carries is literally framed as a word.
dibbēr: Spoke, declared.
דִּבֵּר
This verbal form shares the root with dāḇār and appears here as “speak,” joining the prescribed word to its spoken delivery.
THE PATTERN
An approaching encounter is shaped by what is sent ahead of it.
Then you shall say, They belong to your servant Jacob. It is a present sent to my lord Esau, and look, he is also behind us.A soft answer turns away the burning, but words of pain stir up the nostrils. After these things the Lord showed forth seventy others also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself was about to come.THE THREAD
After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, Do not fear, Abram. I am your shield, and your very great wages.Genesis 32:19 uses the root דבר (d-b-r) for both “manner” and “speak,” holding the message and its delivery together. Genesis 15:1 uses the same root in “the word of the LORD,” showing how one Hebrew root can name both a word and what is spoken.
