This verse in the King James

King James wording
And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

Here, what remains is not mere aftermath: it is already named as a way of escape.

The verse speaks to the fear that one blow takes everything: Esau may strike one company while another escapes. The attack remains real, and the survivor is not imagined away with the group under threat. What remains still has a future beyond the blow.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that one threatened part means everything is already lost gives way to another possibility: one company may be struck while the other escapes.

לִפְלֵיטָה

lifletah

GROWS FROM

פלט

To escape, slip away, or survive.

The Hebrew phrase is literally “for escape”: the remaining company is marked out for survival. The same root can name both the one who gets away and the deliverance itself, joining escape with the life that continues afterward.

ALSO GROWS

palit: One who has escaped; a fugitive or survivor.

פָּלִיט

In Genesis 14:13, one who escapes carries news to Abram; the word can name a survivor who carries the story forward.

peletah: Escape, deliverance, or a surviving remnant.

פְּלֵיטָה

In Joel 2:32, this noun is rendered “deliverance,” showing how the root can name both getting away and the survival that follows.

הַנִּשְׁאָר

hannish'ar

GROWS FROM

שאר

To remain or be left over.

The word translated “left” belongs to the root that also names a remnant. The other company is not merely what is forgotten after the blow; it is what remains, and from that remainder comes escape.

ALSO GROWS

sha'ar: To remain or be left.

שָׁאַר

This verb gives “the company which is left” its sense of continuing to exist after the other company is struck.

she'erit: A remnant; a surviving remainder.

שְׁאֵרִית

This noun turns what remains into a recognizable remnant, the same idea carried by the company that survives here.

A threatened whole can continue through what remains and survives the blow.

The remnant will turn back, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.
Isaiah 10:21 · SDVThe future continues through a remnant that remains and returns.
And it will be that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will slip free, for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be escape, as the LORD has said, and among the survivors whom the LORD calls.
Joel 2:32 · SDVDeliverance is named alongside a remnant, linking escape with what survives.
So also now, in this present season, there is a remnant left behind, picked out by favor.
Romans 11:5 · SDVEven when a whole seems at risk of disappearing, a remnant remains in the present.
And the remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.
2 Kings 19:30 · SDV

Genesis says the company that remains is “for escape”; here, “remnant” and “escaped” draw on the same two Hebrew roots, ⁨שאר⁩ and ⁨פלט⁩. The connection reveals the paired movement: what remains escapes, then takes root and bears fruit.
