King James wording
King James Version
And Samlah died, and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead.THE KEY
The successor’s name means “asked for,” and his place bears a name of spaciousness: one ruler dies, but the reign continues.
THE MEANING
A ruler’s death does not leave the seat of rule empty: Saul reigns where Samlah did. The office passes to another person, while the life that held it ends; succession and mortality stand together in this verse.
THE ROOT
שָׁאוּל
Sha'ul
GROWS FROM
ש־א־ל
š-ʾ-l
ask, request, seek
“Saul” in this verse is Sha'ul. Sha’ul is the passive form of sha’al, so his name means “asked for” or “requested.” The verse names him as successor but does not say he was sought out; his name carries that sense without making it a claim about how he took the throne.
ALSO GROWS
sha'al: ask, request
שָׁאַל
The verb makes the root inside Saul’s name audible: he is the one asked for.
she'elah: request, petition
שְׁאֵלָה
This noun shows the same root can name the request itself, giving Saul’s name the sense of someone sought or requested.
רְחֹבוֹת
Reḥovot
GROWS FROM
ר־ח־ב
r-ḥ-b
be wide, be spacious
“Rehoboth” in this verse is Reḥovot. Reḥovot carries the sense of broad or open spaces. The place-name beside the river holds a meaning that the English transliteration leaves quiet: this ruler’s seat is named for spaciousness.
ALSO GROWS
raḥav: wide, broad
רָחָב
This form expresses the root’s quality of breadth, which remains inside the name Rehoboth.
merḥav: wide place, open space
מֶרְחָב
This branch names the space itself, echoing the sense held by Rehoboth.
THE PATTERN
Human rule is bounded by the ruler’s life, so an office passes beyond the person who holds it.
And Solomon lay down with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father, and Rehoboam his son reigned in his place. And they truly were many priests, for death held them back from remaining.THE THREAD
And he pulled up from there, and dug another well, and over that they did not strive. And he called the name of it Rehoboth, the wide places, and he said, For now the LORD has widened a place for us, and we shall bear fruit in the land.Rehoboth in both verses carries ר־ח־ב (r-ḥ-b), the root meaning “be wide, be spacious.” In Genesis 26:22, that breadth appears as room made for dwelling; here, it is carried in the name of the place where a successor reigns.
