This verse in the King James

King James wording
And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fatfleshed and well favoured; and they fed in a meadow:

The verse’s abundance is already growing out of its source: the cows rise from the river and graze in the meadow.

You see abundance in motion: it rises out of the river, then feeds in the meadow. Its health and beauty are visible, but its nourishment is tied to water and pasture. Flourishing appears as provision received and sustained.

עֹלֹת

ʿolot

GROWS FROM

עלה

to rise, ascend, or go up

The word translated “came up” carries the basic sense of ascending, so the cows emerge into view from the river. The same root names ⁨עֹלָה⁩ (ʿolah), an ascent offering, another image of something rising.

ALSO GROWS

ʿolah: ascent offering

עֹלָה

Its name carries the sense of what rises, extending the verse’s image of abundance emerging from the water.

maʿalah: ascent, upward step

מַעֲלָה

This related word keeps the root’s movement upward, echoing the cows’ rise into the scene.

וַתִּרְעֶינָה

vatirʿena

GROWS FROM

רעה

to graze, pasture, or tend

“grazed” in this verse is vatirʿena. The word rendered “fed” uses the root that also describes a shepherd’s tending and gives ⁨מִרְעֶה⁩ (mirʿeh), pasture. Hebrew holds grazing, tending, and the feeding place in one word-family: the cows’ plenty is a relationship with a sustaining place, not abundance floating free of its source.

ALSO GROWS

roʿeh: shepherd, one who tends

רֹעֶה

The same root joins the cows’ feeding with the act of tending them.

mirʿeh: pasture, grazing land

מִרְעֶה

This related noun names the place where grazing happens, tying the food to the land that sustains it.

Life-giving abundance flows from a source and becomes nourishment where it reaches.

And a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it was split and became four heads.
Genesis 2:10 · SDVA river leaves Eden to water the garden, as the meadow is where the cows find nourishment.
You visit the earth and give it drink; you enrich it greatly. The channels of God are full of waters. You set their grain firm, for so you have set it.
Psalm 65:9 · SDVThe full river enriches the earth and makes grain grow, showing water becoming provision.
The one who leans his weight into me, as the writing has said, rivers of living waters will flow from his belly.
John 7:38 · SDVLiving water flows outward as a source that sustains life.
Behold, seven years of great fullness come throughout all the land of Egypt.
Genesis 41:29 · SDV

The cows’ health and grazing are not an isolated image: the next verse identifies them with seven years of plenty across the land. The river scene gives that abundance a source and a form; the following verse gives it duration.
