This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the lean and the ill favoured kine did eat up the first seven fat kine:

Scarcity in this dream is not empty space; it is an appetite that devours abundance.

Lack has teeth here: the thin, ill-favoured cows actively consume the full, healthy ones. The verse presents abundance as something a destructive condition can swallow, even when that condition looks weak.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that what is full and flourishing is automatically safe from being consumed.

וַתֹּאכַלְנָה

va-tokhalnah

GROWS FROM

אכל

To eat or consume.

“ate up” in this verse is va-tokhalnah. The lean cows are the ones doing the eating: the image gives lack an active appetite. The same root names food itself, joining the act of consuming with what becomes its provision.

ALSO GROWS

ʾokhel: Food.

אֹכֶל

Names what is eaten, making the abundance in the dream the object of the consuming action.

maʾakhal: Food; something for eating.

מַאֲכָל

Shows the same root naming what is taken in, not only the act of eating.

רָעוֹת

raʿot

GROWS FROM

רעע

To be bad, harmful, or evil.

“bad to look upon” in this verse is raʿot. “Ill favoured” can sound like a description of appearance, but the Hebrew word belongs to the language of badness and harm. The cows carry an ominous quality, not merely an unattractive one.

ALSO GROWS

raʿ: Bad; evil.

רַע

Shares the root’s plain language of what is bad, linking the cows’ appearance with their destructive role in the dream.

raʿah: Harm; calamity.

רָעָה

Shows how the same word family can name damaging conditions, fitting the cows’ image of a destructive force.

A consuming force can overtake what is flourishing and consume its fruitfulness.

And there shall rise after them seven years of hunger, and all the fullness shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the hunger shall consume the land.
Genesis 41:30 · SDVFamine is portrayed as an active consumer that overtakes a land after its years of plenty.
What the shearer has left, the locust has eaten; and what the locust has left, the lapper has eaten; and what the lapper has left, the gnawer has eaten.
Joel 1:4 · SDVEach devouring wave consumes what remains, leaving the land’s fruitfulness progressively stripped away.
And the cares of this age, and the deceit of riches, and the hungers for other things, going in, choke the word, and it becomes fruitless.
Mark 4:19 · SDVCares and desires overwhelm what is growing until its fruitfulness is choked.
And they went into their bellies, and it could not be known that they had gone in. They were still bad to look upon, as at the beginning. And I awoke.
Genesis 41:21 · SDV

The same eating root continues into the next verse, where the cows consume the plenty yet remain ill favoured. The image sharpens: abundance is swallowed, but the consuming condition remains.
