King James wording
King James Version
And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.THE KEY
What is spoken can already be a thing: Hebrew calls Joseph’s proposal *davar*, a word that means both utterance and matter.
THE MEANING
A proposal is more than private intention once it stands before others as a matter they can weigh. Here Pharaoh and all his servants see the same thing as good, so shared recognition gives the plan public standing.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse loosens the belief that insight has value only in the eye of its originator: its goodness is visible to Pharaoh and all his servants.
THE ROOT
הַדָּבָר
hadavar
GROWS FROM
ד־ב־ר
d-b-r
To speak or utter; as a noun, a word, matter, or affair.
The English “thing” makes Joseph’s proposal sound separate from speech, but Hebrew calls it *davar*, the same word that names an utterance and a matter. The proposal is already a real affair under discussion, and its goodness is recognized together.
ALSO GROWS
davar: Word, matter, thing, or affair.
דָּבָר
This is the word used for Joseph’s proposal: what has been spoken is also the matter now being judged.
dibber: He spoke; to speak.
דִּבֵּר
This verbal branch shares the root of *davar*, joining the spoken proposal to the thing it becomes.
THE PATTERN
A word takes form through what it brings into being or calls forth in action.
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. For he says, and it comes to be; he commands, and it stands. But be makers of the word, and not hearers only, miscounting yourselves.THE THREAD
So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth. It shall not return to me empty, but shall do what I delight in, and shall break through in the thing to which I sent it.The Hebrew word translated “word” is *davar*, the same noun used for “thing” in Genesis 41:37. Isaiah shows the word going out and accomplishing its purpose; here, a spoken proposal stands as a matter whose goodness is seen by all.
