This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.

The ark’s final closing comes from the LORD: Noah enters, and the LORD shuts him inside.

The creatures enter as God commands, and the LORD himself closes Noah inside. The final act is not Noah securing the entrance but the LORD enclosing him within the ark. Here, a closed boundary holds life while danger gathers outside.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse loosens the belief that preservation depends on controlling the final boundary: Noah enters, but the LORD does the closing.

סָגַר

sāgar

GROWS FROM

סגר

s-g-r

To close or shut; by extension, to enclose.

“shut him in” in this verse is sāgar. The verb names the closing that establishes a boundary around Noah. Its related words give that boundary a concrete shape: what is shut becomes closed, and a frame marks an inside held apart from what lies beyond.

ALSO GROWS

sāgūr: Closed, shut.

סָגוּר

This form shows the state produced by the root’s action: Noah is enclosed within the ark.

misgeret: Frame, border, enclosing rim.

מִסְגֶּרֶת

This related noun gives the root a spatial shape: a boundary forms an inside held apart from what lies beyond.

A boundary around life can preserve it when danger presses outside.

Go, my people, enter your inner rooms, and shut your doors behind you. Hide yourself for a little moment, until the seething passes over.
Isaiah 26:20 · SDVEntering and shutting the doors creates a sheltered boundary while danger passes outside.
You are my hiding place. You guard me from the narrow place, and you circle me with songs of escape. Selah.
Psalm 32:7 · SDVThe speaker describes being surrounded by a hiding place that holds them through trouble.
I am the door. Through me, if anyone enters, he shall be delivered, and shall go in and out, and shall find pasture.
John 10:9 · SDVThe door marks a threshold through which entry opens into deliverance and pasture.
But the men stretched out their hand, drew Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.
Genesis 19:10 · SDV

Genesis uses the same Hebrew root, ⁨סגר⁩ (sāgar, to close or shut), when Lot is drawn inside and the door is closed against the crowd. The shared verb makes closure a threshold around those inside, as when the LORD shuts Noah within the ark.
