King James wording
King James Version
And God spake unto Noah, saying,THE KEY
What preserves you is not meant to become your permanent boundary; the word that follows opens the way outward.
THE MEANING
You can be carried through what narrowed your life and still need a word to show what comes next. This verse holds the pause between protection and departure, where the next movement begins when the word reaches you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being kept safe does not mean the place that kept you safe must remain your home.
THE ROOT
וַיְדַבֵּר
wayedabber
GROWS FROM
ד־ב־ר
d-b-r
Speak, declare.
Here, the verb וַיְדַבֵּר (wayedabber, “and he spoke”) comes from the root ד־ב־ר (d-b-r, “speak, declare”). Its noun branch דָּבָר (dābār, “word” or “matter”) holds speech close to the matter itself: the word spoken here opens the way to concrete movement in the next verse.
ALSO GROWS
dābār: Word; matter or affair.
דָּבָר
The same root can name speech and the matter at hand, linking the word Noah receives with the action that follows.
dibbēr: To speak or declare.
דִּבֵּר
This verb form shows speech as an act that can set direction, as God’s word does for Noah.
נֹחַ
Nōaḥ
GROWS FROM
נ־ו־ח
n-w-ḥ
Rest, settle, come to rest.
The name נֹחַ (Nōaḥ, “Noah”) is associated with נוּחַ (nûaḥ, “to rest or settle”). Here, the one named for rest receives a word before the departure in the next verse: rest is not permanent confinement, but the point from which a new movement begins.
ALSO GROWS
nûaḥ: To rest, settle, or come to rest.
נוּחַ
This verb carries the resting quality echoed in Noah’s name.
menûḥāh: Resting place or repose.
מְנוּחָה
The resting place is a condition that can hold someone through danger without becoming their final boundary.
THE PATTERN
A spoken word carries life from concealment into its next form.
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. He sends his word and heals them, and slips them free from their pits. And when he had said these things, he cried out with a great voice, Lazarus, come out!THE THREAD
He sends his word and heals them, and slips them free from their pits. The word translated “word” here is דָּבָר (dābār, “word” or “matter”), a noun from the root ד־ב־ר (d-b-r, “speak, declare”) heard in “spake” in Genesis 8:15. Psalm 107 shows this word reaching into destruction with healing and deliverance; in Noah’s verse, the spoken word opens the way from preservation toward departure.
