This verse in the King James

King James wording
And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan.

The first family beyond the ark is a named lineage: Shem (⁨שֵׁם⁩, Shem, “name”) leads the list, and it already reaches forward to Canaan.

This beginning arrives through family ties: Noah’s sons come through the threshold together, and Ham is already identified through his own son. The future is present in this lineage, not outside it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A fresh start means becoming disconnected from every tie that came before it.

הַיֹּצְאִים

hayotze'im

GROWS FROM

יצא

yatsa

to go out, come forth

“came out” in this verse is hayotze'im. The word describes the sons as those coming out, so their departure is also an emergence into what follows. A related noun can mean an issue or source: the family’s going out becomes the beginning of a line that continues beyond the ark.

ALSO GROWS

yetsi'ah: exit, departure

יְצִיאָה

This is the movement through the ark’s threshold named as an exit.

motsa: issue, source, origin

מוֹצָא

The same root can name what comes out; here the family’s emergence opens a future generation.

בְּנֵי

b'nei

GROWS FROM

בנה

banah

to build, establish

The word for sons is linked to building: kinship carries a household forward. The verse moves from the sons who come out to Ham, named as the father of Canaan, making that continuation visible.

ALSO GROWS

ben: son

בֵּן

The singular carries the same kinship word found here in its plural construct form.

banah: he built

בָּנָה

This verb shares the root and illuminates how a family line can build what comes next.

A new beginning carries life forward through named kinship and generations.

And Noah went out, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him.
Genesis 8:18 · SDVThe family emerges from the ark together, making the new beginning a shared passage.
And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, Bear fruit, and multiply, and fill the earth.
Genesis 9:1 · SDVThe blessing places the future of the renewed world in the continuing life of Noah and his sons.
And he made from one blood every nation of humankind to settle upon all the face of the earth, marking out their fitted seasons and setting the boundary stones of their dwelling.
Acts 17:26 · SDVThe verse connects humanity’s many nations to a shared human origin and continuing life on the earth.
And Noah went out, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him.
Genesis 8:18 · SDV

Both verses use ⁨יצא⁩ (yatsa, “go out, come forth”) for the family’s movement beyond the ark. Genesis 8:18 shows the whole household emerging; Genesis 9:18 names the sons and traces that emerging line to Canaan.
