This verse in the King James

King James wording
They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad.

The captor’s joy reveals how power turns people into a catch and calls the capture a triumph.

When power treats people as catch, their lives become inventory, and taking them becomes a reason to celebrate. The verse sets that rejoicing beside the nets, exposing it as part of the violence rather than proof that the taking is right.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a successful capture, or the captor’s satisfaction, makes the taking right.

יַאַסְפֵהוּ

yaʾasfēhû

GROWS FROM

אסף

Gather, collect, bring in.

“gather” in this verse is yaʾasfēhû. The root’s branches name both a harvest brought in and a gatherer who stays behind to bring people through (Isaiah 52:12). Here that same act collects people as prey; the root does not sanctify the gathering, the gatherer and where the gathered are taken reveal its nature.

ALSO GROWS

ʾāsaf: To gather, collect, bring in.

אָסַף

This is the verb behind “gather them”; it makes the captives a collected catch.

ʾāsîf: Ingathering, harvest.

אָסִיף

The same root names the gathered yield in Exodus 23:16, making the treatment of people as a crop to be hauled in especially stark.

meʾassēf: One who gathers; rendered “rereward” in Isaiah 52:12.

מְאַסֵּף

There the same root describes the God of Israel gathering from behind, a protective gathering unlike the captor’s collection of prey here.

Fishing imagery reveals how gathering people can express predatory control, while its changed use can turn the image into a summons to follow.

He lies in wait in the hidden place, like a lion in his shelter. He lies in wait to snatch the poor; he snatches the poor, dragging him into his net.
Psalm 10:9 · SDVThe net belongs to a predator who treats the poor as prey.
Behold, I am sending for many fishers, declares the LORD, and they shall fish them. And afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and from every hill, and out of the clefts of the crags.
Jeremiah 16:16 · SDVPeople are fished for and hunted as a form of sweeping judgment.
And he said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
Matthew 4:19 · SDVThe fishing image shifts into a summons to follow.
For you shall not go out in a rush, nor go in flight, for the LORD goes before you, and the God of Israel will gather you in.
Isaiah 52:12 · SDV

“Rereward” translates a form of ⁨אסף⁩ (ʾāsaf), the same root as “gather” in Habakkuk. The conqueror gathers people into a net; here the God of Israel gathers from behind as the people depart, showing how the same act takes its nature from who gathers and where they are led.
