This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built.

The Hebrew word for the house being “built” can also describe a family being built into existence.

You hear a community say that the time has not come while the LORD’s house remains unbuilt. “Not yet” is more than a calendar statement here: it names the house’s present state of deferral. The verse holds the timing claim beside the unfinished work.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that calling a delay “not yet” settles whether the work is due; the unbuilt house remains visible alongside the claim.

GROWS FROM

בנה

b-n-h

to build, establish

The verb behind “should be built” shares its root with a form Sarai uses when she says she may be “built up” through Hagar, rendered in the KJV as “obtain children.” The root lets “house” carry a family dimension too: a dwelling and a people can both be built.

ALSO GROWS

banah: to build, establish

בָּנָה

This is the active form of the verb in the verse; the house’s construction is held inside it.

’ibbāneh: I may be built up; rendered “obtain children” in Genesis 16:2

אִבָּנֶה

The same root describes a family coming into being, widening the sense of building beyond walls.

The words “not yet” take their meaning from whether a work has an appointed time or is being postponed.

To everything there is an appointed time, and a time for every delight under the heavens.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 · SDVTime belongs to the purpose itself, giving “not yet” a real season to name.
For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and at the end it will breathe and not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it. Because it will surely come, it will not stay behind.
Habakkuk 2:3 · SDVThe vision has an appointed time, so its waiting is tied to a stated arrival.
Then Jesus said to them, My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.
John 7:6 · SDV“Not yet” names a genuinely unarrived time, showing that the phrase can describe timing rather than a house left unfinished.
And Sarai said to Abram, Behold, the LORD has held me shut from bearing. Go in, I pray you, to my handmaid. Perhaps I may be built through her. And Abram heard and responded to the voice of Sarai.
Genesis 16:2 · SDV

The Hebrew behind “obtain children” is ⁨אִבָּנֶה⁩ (’ibbāneh), from the same ⁨בנה⁩ root as Haggai’s “built.” The shared word lets the house in Haggai open toward household and family, as well as a physical dwelling.
