King James wording
King James Version
So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)THE KEY
The oath is about being shut out of God’s settled rest, the rest that belongs to God and must be entered.
THE MEANING
God’s rest is a real destination you enter, and this verse names the possibility of being kept outside it. The oath in anger gives that boundary full weight: the exclusion is serious and carries the force of a sworn refusal.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being near God’s promise does not guarantee that you enter his rest.
THE ROOT
κατάπαυσιν
katapausin
GROWS FROM
παύω
pauō
To cease, stop, or bring to an end; κατά (kata) adds the sense of settling down.
The Greek word translated “rest” carries the shade of cessation: a settled stopping that belongs to God. The phrase “enter into my rest” presents this as a share in God’s settled state, with a real threshold one may enter or be barred from.
ALSO GROWS
katapauō: Bring to rest; cause to cease.
καταπαύω
This verb from the same word family makes the stopping within “rest” audible.
anapauō: Give rest; refresh.
ἀναπαύω
Matthew uses this related form when Jesus promises rest to the weary, showing rest as something received.
pauomai: Cease; stop.
παύομαι
This form makes cessation explicit, illuminating the settled quality of the rest named here.
THE PATTERN
God’s rest follows completed work and is a participation that can be given, entered, or withheld.
And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had made, and he stopped on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And he said, My face will go with you, and I will give you rest.Come to me, all you who toil and have been loaded down, and I will give you rest.THE THREAD
To whom I swore in the burning of my anger, that they shall not come into my resting place.Hebrews carries this oath forward from Psalm 95:11, where “rest” is מְנוּחָה (menuchah, rest), from נוּחַ (nuach, settle down or rest). That root pictures settled repose, and the quotation carries the warning forward as a boundary around that destination.
