This verse in the King James

King James wording
And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.

Levi is both the one who receives the tenth and, through Abraham, the one counted as giving it.

This verse shows how belonging reaches through a representative: Levi receives tithes, yet Abraham’s act is also counted as Levi’s. The one who carries a family line carries an act that reaches those held within it. Receiving and giving meet in the same person through that shared life.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that receiving places Levi outside the act of giving: he is counted in Abraham’s giving even as he receives tithes.

δεδεκάτωται

dedekatōtai

GROWS FROM

δεκα-

deka

Ten; the counted tenth.

“has given tithes” in this verse is dedekatōtai. The Greek words for Levi receiving tithes and for his being counted as having paid them share the same tenth-family. That repetition binds the two roles together: Levi remains the receiver, yet Abraham’s giving reaches him too.

ALSO GROWS

dekatē: A tenth; a tithe.

δεκάτη

The tithe is a counted tenth, the specific act Abraham performs that reaches Levi through their shared line.

dekatoō: To tithe; to give or receive a tenth.

δεκατόω

This verb from the same family ties the act of tithing to both sides of the verse: Levi receives the tenth and is also counted within Abraham’s giving.

A representative can carry an act whose reach extends to those held within that person.

And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand. And he gave him a tenth of all.
Genesis 14:20 · SDVAbraham gives the tithe to Melchisedec, the act Hebrews 7 sees reaching Levi through his father.
Therefore, as through one man falling short entered into the world, and death through it; and so death passed through to all people, because all have missed the mark.
Romans 5:12 · SDVThe act of one man reaches beyond him, extending its consequence to all.
For as in Adam all die, so also in the Anointed One all will be made alive.
1 Corinthians 15:22 · SDVThose held within Adam or Christ share what is carried through that representative.
For he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
Hebrews 7:10 · SDV

The next verse opens what “in Abraham” holds: Levi is still in his father’s loins when Abraham meets Melchisedec. The act reaches Levi through his line, which is why the receiver is counted as having paid.
