This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say,

The “treasurer” is called a sōkēn, a steward whose root also speaks of usefulness, tying authority to the household it serves.

You are brought to the threshold of a word sent toward the person placed over a household. The title holds a measure of stewardship: authority is bound to the usefulness and care of what is entrusted to it. The verse ends before the message is spoken, holding you at the instant responsibility is summoned.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being placed over the house does not make you unreachable; the one with authority is still summoned by a word beyond his office.

הַסֹּכֵן

hasōkēn

GROWS FROM

סכן

s-k-n

To be useful or profitable; in this verse, the sōkēn is the steward over the house.

“steward” in this verse is hasōkēn. The title sōkēn belongs to the ⁨סכן⁩ word family, which elsewhere describes being useful or becoming familiar. It opens the office toward service and close knowledge of the household: authority is bound to the good of what is entrusted to it, not merely to rank.

ALSO GROWS

yiskān: Be profitable or useful.

יִסְכָּן

In Job 22:2, the root asks whether a person can be profitable to God, showing the family’s link between a role and its usefulness.

haskēn: Become acquainted or familiar.

הַסְכֶּן

In Job 22:21, the root describes becoming familiar with someone; this adds closeness and knowledge to the steward’s relation to the house.

Entrusted authority is measured by how it serves the household placed in its care.

And Joseph found favor in his eyes, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he placed into his hand.
Genesis 39:4 · SDVJoseph’s authority over the house comes through service and carries responsibility for what is entrusted to him.
And the Lord said, "Who then is the steady and wise steward whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their measure of grain in due season?"
Luke 12:42 · SDVThe steward’s rule is expressed through providing for the household at the right time.
Moreover, it is sought among portioners that someone be found steady.
1 Corinthians 4:2 · SDVThe steward’s trustworthiness is measured by how the entrusted role is carried.
You will be over my house, and at your mouth all my people will kiss; only in the throne will I be greater than you.
Genesis 41:40 · SDV

Genesis uses the same Hebrew word for “house” (⁨בַּיִת⁩, bayit) and the same phrase, “over my house.” It makes the structure of the office visible: the steward is entrusted with the household, while authority remains above him.
