This verse in the King James

King James wording
Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city:

The thorns rise over the houses of joy themselves: delight does not make a place immune to devastation.

Your joyful places are vulnerable to being overrun: thorns and briers rise across the land and the houses that hold their delight. The verse holds both realities together, the city is joyous, and it is covered by growth that makes it harder to inhabit.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a place marked by joy and community is therefore secure; even a joyous city can be overgrown.

שָׁמִיר

shamir

GROWS FROM

ש־מ־ר

sh-m-r

Guard, keep, watch over.

“briers” in this verse is shamir. The word for brier, shamir, carries the consonants of shamar, to guard or keep. That echo gives the overgrowth a sharp edge: a thorny watch now stands over the places named for joy, turning open communal space toward constriction.

ALSO GROWS

shamar: Guard, keep, watch.

שָׁמַר

This verb names the guarding action echoed in the brier’s consonants, sharpening the image of a thorny boundary taking hold.

mishmeret: Guard, watch, charge.

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

This related form makes guarding a sustained watch, echoing the harsh presence of the briers across the houses and land.

When inhabited or cultivated ground is overtaken by devastation, thorn growth marks the takeover of human space.

Thorns also and thistles shall it sprout for you, and you shall eat the grass of the field.
Genesis 3:18 · SDVThorns emerge from the ground that sustains human life, making hardship visible in the very soil people depend on.
I will set it as a waste. It shall not be pruned or dug, but briers and thorns shall come up. I will also command the clouds to drop no rain upon it.
Isaiah 5:6 · SDVA neglected vineyard becomes waste ground where briers and thorns occupy the space once tended.
But what bears thorns and thistles fails the test, and is near a curse; its end is the burning.
Hebrews 6:8 · SDVThorn-bearing ground signals a condition approaching curse and destruction.
I will set it as a waste. It shall not be pruned or dug, but briers and thorns shall come up. I will also command the clouds to drop no rain upon it.
Isaiah 5:6 · SDV

Isaiah 5:6 repeats the same pair, qots and shamir, and shows thorn growth overtaking a vineyard left untended. The shared brier word opens Isaiah 32:13 further: the joyous city is covered by the same sign of cultivated human space giving way to constriction.
