This verse in the King James

King James wording
The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right.

Counsel becomes a plot, while the needy person’s just speech becomes its target.

This verse names a violence that is present now: someone turns planning and false speech into tools for destroying people with little power. The person in need can speak what is just and still be targeted; their vulnerability does not make their words false. The scheme remains a scheme, even when its words sound deliberate or authoritative.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It dissolves the belief that the vulnerable must be wrong because they are powerless, or that a carefully devised case is just because it is carefully devised.

יָעָץ

yaʿats

GROWS FROM

יעץ

y-ʿ-ṣ

To counsel, advise, or plan.

“deviseth” in this verse is yaʿats. The verb for devising comes from the language of counsel: planning is a kind of counsel put into action. Here that capacity is turned toward destroying the poor, while the needy speak what is right.

ALSO GROWS

ʿēṣāh: Counsel, advice, or a plan.

עֵצָה

It shows that the devising in this verse is deliberate counsel, not accidental harm.

yōʿēṣ: Counselor or adviser.

יוֹעֵץ

It makes visible the human role behind the plan: someone’s counsel can be bent toward harm.

זִמּוֹת

zimot

GROWS FROM

זמם

z-m-m

To devise, scheme, or plot.

“devices” in this verse is zimot. The verse pairs the act of planning with a word for schemes, underscoring that the harm is designed. What looks like an instrument is already shaped by an intention to destroy.

ALSO GROWS

zāmam: To devise or plot.

זָמַם

The verb names the deliberate planning behind the devices.

zimmāh: A scheme or plot, often a wicked one.

זִמָּה

This singular form lies behind the verse’s plural “devices,” making the plotted intent audible in the English.

מִשְׁפָּט

mishpat

GROWS FROM

שפט

sh-p-ṭ

To judge or decide a matter.

The needy person speaks in the language of judgment and justice, even as false words are used against them. The contrast is not between a plan and confusion, but between a plotted scheme and a just claim.

ALSO GROWS

shāphaṭ: To judge or render a decision.

שָׁפַט

It links the needy person’s “right” to the act of judging a matter fairly.

shōphēṭ: A judge or adjudicator.

שֹׁפֵט

It connects justice to the person responsible for deciding whose claim is heard.

Power harms the poor when planning, speech, or judgment is turned into a tool for denying them what is right.

To bend aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the bowed ones of my people, that widows be their spoil, and that they strip the fatherless!
Isaiah 10:2 · SDVThe verse names judgment itself being turned aside so the needy and poor can be preyed upon.
For I know how many are your rebellions, and how great your missing the mark. They press the aligned, they take a bribe, and they bend the one in want away from judgment at the gate.
Amos 5:12 · SDVThe poor are denied their right through corruption, even while the injustice is plainly named.
Look, the wages of the workers who mowed your fields, stripped away by your fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have gone into the ears of the LORD of hosts.
James 5:4 · SDVFraud becomes a tool against workers with little power, while their cry remains heard.
The LORD of hosts has sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so it shall be, and as I have counseled, so it shall stand.
Isaiah 14:24 · SDV

The verb rendered “deviseth” in Isaiah 32:7 is ⁨יָעָץ⁩ (yaʿats), meaning to counsel or plan; Isaiah 14:24 uses the same root in “as I have purposed.” The shared root shows that planning has a direction: here it is bent toward destroying the needy, while the LORD’s purpose stands.
