This verse in the King James

King James wording
But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

The silence is the command taking form: the taunt receives no answer because an authority has already spoken.

When a voice presses you for a reply, its demand alone does not set the terms of your response. Here, silence is deliberate, held by a command with greater authority than the voice provoking it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that every demand deserves an answer on the demander’s terms falls away; restraint here is obedience, not surrender.

וַיַּחֲרִישׁוּ

wayaḥărîšû

GROWS FROM

חרש

ḥ-r-š

Be silent; the same root also carries the sense of being deaf.

“kept silent” in this verse is wayaḥărîšû. The root ⁨חָרַשׁ⁩ (ḥāraš, “be silent”) also appears in a form meaning ⁨חֵרֵשׁ⁩ (ḥērēš, “deaf”). That range gives the silence a concrete edge: the taunt does not draw speech from them.

ALSO GROWS

ḥāraš: Be silent, keep quiet.

חָרַשׁ

This is the root behind “held their peace,” showing that their quiet is an action.

ḥērēš: A deaf person.

חֵרֵשׁ

The same root’s association with deafness connects silence with not taking up what is being said.

מִצְוַת

miṣvat

GROWS FROM

צוה

ṣ-w-h

Command, charge, direct.

“commandment” in this verse is miṣvat. Their silence has a source: it is shaped by a command already given. The verse presents quiet as chosen obedience rather than an answer forced out of them.

ALSO GROWS

miṣwāh: Commandment, instruction given with authority.

מִצְוָה

This form names the king’s directive that governs the scene.

ṣiwwāh: Commanded, charged.

צִוָּה

This verbal form makes the command an act of directing, not a vague preference for quiet.

עָנוּ

ʿānû

GROWS FROM

ענה

ʿ-n-h

Answer, respond.

“answered” in this verse is ʿānû. The root ⁨עָנָה⁩ (ʿānāh, “answer”) appears first in the report that they do not answer and again in the command to answer him not. The repeated verb makes their silence the command enacted, word for word.

ALSO GROWS

ʿānāh: Answer, respond.

עָנָה

It names the response withheld in the first half of the verse.

maʿăneh: An answer, response.

מַעֲנֶה

This noun from the same root makes the withheld response a real possibility, not an inability to speak.

Silence can keep a hostile voice from setting the terms of an exchange when answering would pull the listener into its frame.

Answer not a thick-headed one according to his folly, lest you also come level with him.
Proverbs 26:4 · SDVThe withheld answer prevents the exchange from drawing the responder into the fool’s terms.
He was pressed, and he was bowed low, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb he was led to the slaughter, and like a ewe before her shearers he was mute, so he did not open his mouth.
Isaiah 53:7 · SDVOppression and silence stand together; the verse does not soften either one.
Who, when he was insulted, hurled no insult back; when he suffered, he threatened not; but handed himself over to the one who judges by alignment.
1 Peter 2:23 · SDVReviling does not become a renewed threat through his mouth.
But I, like a deaf man, do not hear, and I am like a mute who does not open his mouth.
Psalm 38:13 · SDV

The root ⁨חָרַשׁ⁩ (ḥāraš, “be silent”) behind Isaiah’s “held their peace” also appears as ⁨חֵרֵשׁ⁩ (ḥērēš, “deaf”) in this Psalm. The shared root places silence beside not hearing, opening a connection between refusing speech and refusing to receive the provocation as a command to answer.
