This verse in the King James

King James wording
The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

In Hebrew, a “way” is a path made by treading, so even the wilderness can become a road for the LORD’s presence.

The voice meets you in the wilderness now: a place that feels pathless can still become a route for the LORD’s presence. Preparing that way means clearing what blocks passage and leveling the route; the desert is not proof that movement has ended.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a barren, pathless season means the LORD is absent or cannot reach you.

דֶּרֶךְ

derekh

GROWS FROM

ד־ר־ך

To tread or step; a way is a route marked by passage.

The word rendered “way” carries the sense of a path made by walking. The verse’s road is not an abstraction: it is a route through the wilderness that becomes passable as obstacles are cleared.

ALSO GROWS

darak: to tread, step, or trample

דָּרַךְ

The verb reveals the walking action inside “way”: a route is marked by passage.

midrakh: a trodden place or track

מִדְרָךְ

This related form echoes the image of a path worn into the ground by steps.

פַּנּוּ

pannu

GROWS FROM

פ־נ־ה

To turn, face, or direct oneself.

“Clear” in this verse is pannu. The command rendered “prepare” comes from a verb of turning or facing; in this phrase it means clearing the way. The image is directional work in the road, turning aside what blocks passage.

ALSO GROWS

panah: to turn, face, or direct oneself

פָּנָה

This is the verb behind the command to prepare the way.

pinnah: corner or turning point

פִּנָּה

The related image of a corner brings out the root’s sense of a change in direction.

יַשְׁרוּ

yashru

GROWS FROM

י־ש־ר

Straight, level, or upright.

“make straight” in this verse is yashru. Here “straight” is a road image: the route through the desert is made direct and level. The same word-family also carries the sense of uprightness, joining a passable road with a line set right.

ALSO GROWS

yashar: straight or upright

יָשָׁר

It names both the direct line of a road and the quality of being upright.

mishor: level ground or a plain

מִישׁוֹר

This branch makes the highway’s leveling concrete: rough ground becomes an even route.

A way becomes passable when what obstructs it is cleared and the path is made level.

And it shall be said, Heap up, heap up, clear the way, lift up the stumbling block out of the way of my people.
Isaiah 57:14 · SDVThe same call to prepare the way names the obstruction directly: the stumblingblock is taken out of the path.
As it is written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah, the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, Make ready the road of the LORD, make his paths straight.
Luke 3:4 · SDVThe wilderness voice again pictures arrival as a path made ready and straight.
And make straight tracks for your feet, so that what limps may not be turned aside, but rather be healed.
Hebrews 12:13 · SDVStraight paths keep the way open for feet that might otherwise be turned aside.
And it shall be said, Heap up, heap up, clear the way, lift up the stumbling block out of the way of my people.
Isaiah 57:14 · SDV

This verse repeats the same Hebrew word for “way,” derekh (⁨דֶּרֶךְ⁩), and makes the clearing visible: a stumblingblock is lifted out of the route. It opens Isaiah 40:3’s image further, the way is prepared by removing what blocks passage.
