This verse in the King James

King James wording
His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.

The watchmen fail twice: the eyes appointed to see cannot perceive, and the voices appointed to warn cannot sound.

This verse speaks now wherever those relied on to perceive danger have gone blind to it and fallen silent. The watchful role remains, but the sight, warning voice, and wakefulness that make it watchful are absent.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that holding a watchful position means one is actually vigilant: a guard who cannot see or sound an alarm is still failing to guard.

צֹפָיו

tsofav

GROWS FROM

צפה

tsaphah

To look out, watch, or keep watch.

“watchmen” in this verse is tsofav. The word names people whose very role is to look out. The verse sets that calling against blindness and silence, exposing the gap between occupying a watchtower and actually seeing.

ALSO GROWS

tsopheh: One who watches or looks out.

צֹפֶה

It shares the seed of “watchmen,” keeping the verse’s focus on seeing as the watchman’s defining work.

mitzpeh: A lookout or place from which one watches.

מִצְפֶּה

This branch evokes the vantage point the watchmen occupy, sharpening the contrast between their position and their failure to perceive.

יָדָעוּ

yada'u

GROWS FROM

ידע

yada

To know or perceive.

“do not perceive” in this verse is yada'u. The Hebrew says they do not know or perceive, placing failed perception beside blindness. Their failure is not just that they lack information: the verse names a knowing that never comes into view.

ALSO GROWS

da'at: Knowledge or understanding.

דַּעַת

Its shared root makes their failure to know the absence of the very perception their watch requires.

madda: Knowledge or learning.

מַדָּע

This branch echoes the verse’s charge that the watchmen lack knowing, even as their role calls for clear perception.

Watchfulness is proven by seeing what is coming and making the warning heard.

For thus the Lord said to me, Go, set a watchman. Let him declare what he sees.
Isaiah 21:6 · SDVThe watchman’s charge joins seeing directly to declaring what is seen.
But if the watchman sees the sword come, and does not blow the horn, and the people are not warned; if the sword comes and takes any living soul from among them, he is taken away in his crookedness; but his blood I will seek out from the watchman's hand.
Ezekiel 33:6 · SDVA watchman who sees danger but stays silent leaves the people unwarned.
Therefore stay awake, and remember, that for three years I did not stop warning each one, night and day, with tears.
Acts 20:31 · SDVWatching becomes care through continual warning.
Your watchmen lift up the voice; together they ring out. For eye to eye they see when the LORD turns back to Zion.
Isaiah 52:8 · SDV

Both verses call the watchmen ⁨צֹפִים⁩ (tsofim), from ⁨צפה⁩ (tsaphah), “to look out” or “keep watch.” Isaiah 56:10 gives watchmen whose sight and voices fail; here, the same root’s calling comes alive as they see and lift their voices.
