King James wording
King James Version
Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.THE KEY
The fire consumes more than a building: it reaches the place where a people’s sacred identity, praise, and treasured life have taken form.
THE MEANING
The verse puts sacred space and cherished things together in present ruin, with the fathers’ praise still audible in its words. It names devastation without pretending that praise makes the loss smaller.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that what is set apart, praised, or deeply loved is therefore beyond destruction.
THE ROOT
קָדְשֵׁנוּ
qodshenu
GROWS FROM
קדשׁ
q-d-sh
to set apart as sacred
“set-apart house” in this verse is qodshenu. The phrase names this as the house of the community’s set-apartness. The fire reaches the physical home of what distinguishes the community as sacred, while ancestral praise and treasured things remain in the same field of loss.
ALSO GROWS
qadosh: set apart, sacred
קָדוֹשׁ
It carries the same set-apart quality named in the house.
miqdash: sanctuary, set-apart place
מִקְדָּשׁ
It names a sacred place from the same root, as in the sanctuary destroyed in Psalm 74:7.
qiddesh: set apart, consecrate
קִדֵּשׁ
This action form shows the root’s movement of marking something as sacred.
THE PATTERN
Sacred houses can be destroyed, and their loss reaches beyond the walls to the memories and treasures held there.
They send fire into your set-apart place; they defile the dwelling place of your name down to the ground. The Lord pushes away his altar, spurns his set-apart place, and gives the walls of her palaces into the hand of the enemy. They roar in the house of the LORD as on the day of appointed time.As for these things you gaze upon, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another, but each will be loosed and torn down.THE THREAD
They send fire into your set-apart place; they defile the dwelling place of your name down to the ground.Isaiah’s קָדְשֵׁנוּ (qodshenu, “our set-apartness”) and Psalm’s מִקְדָּשׁ (miqdash, “set-apart place”) grow from קדשׁ (q-d-sh, “set apart”). The shared root shows the fire reaches the community’s sacred place itself: this is grief over the destruction of the house that held its holiness.
