King James wording
King James Version
And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.THE KEY
Here, “rest” is a swarm coming down: every crevice and thorn patch becomes a landing place.
THE MEANING
The arriving swarm settles across ravines, rock clefts, thorns, and brush. The verb names settling or alighting, but the presence settling there brings no ease. Even the land’s concealed and rough places become occupied.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A hidden or hard-to-reach place is not automatically beyond the reach of what is coming; the verse names even crevices and thorn cover as places the swarm occupies.
THE ROOT
וְנָחוּ
wə-nāḥū
GROWS FROM
נוח
n-w-ḥ (nuach): to settle, come to rest
“settle” in this verse is wə-nāḥū. The root makes “rest” an act of settling, not necessarily a state of peace: the swarm determines its force here. The ark uses the same verb when it rests in Genesis 8:4, showing that the settling itself does not tell you whether what arrives brings safety or threat.
ALSO GROWS
menuchah: rest, resting place
מְנוּחָה
The root names both the act of settling and a place of rest; here, even ravines and clefts become places where the swarm settles.
vat-tanaḥ: and it rested or settled; used of the ark in Genesis 8:4
וַתָּנַח
The ark’s settling marks arrival at safety, while the same root describes the swarm occupying the land’s rough places.
THE PATTERN
A descending presence can turn hidden and ordinary spaces alike into places it occupies.
And the river shall swarm with frogs, which shall go up and come into your house, and into your bedchamber, and upon your bed, and into the house of your servants, and upon your people, and into your ovens, and into your kneading troughs. In the city they rush, on the wall they run, upon the houses they climb, through the windows they come like a thief. And locusts come out of the smoke upon the earth, and to them is given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.THE THREAD
And the breath of the LORD will rest upon him, the breath of wisdom and discernment, of counsel and strength, of knowing and of the awe of the LORD.The same root describes the swarm settling here and the LORD’s breath resting upon him in Isaiah 11:2. The root stays the same; what settles changes the scene.
