This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

The same word names your confession and the demons’ belief, exposing that a true statement about God is not yet the same thing as entrusting yourself to God.

You can hold the correct confession while standing in terror before the One you confess. The demons recognize that God is one and tremble, so agreement alone does not reveal a life resting in trust. The verse brings this distinction into the present: recognition is not the same as reliance.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse dissolves the belief that saying the right thing about God, by itself, means you trust God. The demons share the confession, yet tremble.

GROWS FROM

πιστ-

pist-

The Greek word family carries the sense of trust and reliance; its related adjective describes what is trustworthy or steady.

Both occurrences of “believe” use the same verb, ⁨πιστεύω⁩ (pisteuō, believe or trust), so the sentence gives the speaker and the demons the same word. The word family points toward reliance, while the demons’ trembling exposes the distance between affirming a truth and resting your weight in it.

ALSO GROWS

pistis: trust, reliance

πίστις

This related noun opens “belief” toward reliance, not merely agreement with a statement.

pistos: trustworthy, steady

πιστός

This related adjective gives trust a quality of steadiness, highlighting what a bare confession has not yet shown.

Trust is more than an affirmed truth; it becomes visible in the life and love that answer it.

And he leaned his weight on the LORD, and he counted it to him as alignment.
Genesis 15:6 · SDVAbraham’s trust is expressed as reliance on the LORD, not simply as agreement with a proposition.
So also trust, if it has no works, is dead, by itself.
James 2:17 · SDVJames names the pattern directly: trust left without expression is lifeless.
For in Jesus, the Anointed One, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any strength, but trust that works through love.
Galatians 5:6 · SDVHere trust becomes visible through the love it brings into action.
Hear and respond, O Israel. The LORD our God is one LORD.
Deuteronomy 6:4 · SDV

James’s confession that God is one echoes this declaration. It begins with “Hear,” ⁨שְׁמַע⁩ (shema, hear and respond), and the next verse unfolds that response as love with the whole heart, soul, and might, showing how confession opens into whole-person trust.
