This verse in the King James

King James wording
Thus saith the LORD, After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem.

The LORD says he will ruin the high-rising pride of Judah and Jerusalem (⁨יְרוּשָׁלַיִם⁩, Yerushalayim), whose name carries ⁨שָׁלוֹם⁩ (shalom, wholeness).

The verse speaks now wherever a person or community treats elevation as protection: even a revered name or place does not make pride untouchable. It places even the great pride associated with Jerusalem under the LORD’s action.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that sacred standing or collective greatness makes pride immune from God’s action. This verse places even Jerusalem’s great pride under that action.

גְּאוֹן

ge'on

GROWS FROM

גאה

ga'ah

To rise, be high, or exalt oneself.

“swelling” in this verse is ge'on. The repeated word for pride comes from the language of rising high, so the verse names elevation rather than merely a private feeling. This root can also speak of exaltation or majesty; here that height becomes what the LORD will ruin.

ALSO GROWS

ga'ah: To rise high or be lifted up.

גָּאָה

It reveals the upward posture contained in the pride named here.

ge'im: Those who are lifted up or proud.

גֵּאִים

The branch carries the same image of height from a quality into the people who embody it.

אַשְׁחִית

ashchit

GROWS FROM

שחת

shachat

To ruin, spoil, or corrupt.

“ruin” in this verse is ashchit. The word rendered mar is a form of shachat: the action is active ruining, not a gentle adjustment of appearance. Read beside the root for pride, the verse joins the rise of pride to its deliberate undoing.

ALSO GROWS

shachat: To spoil, destroy, or bring to ruin.

שָׁחַת

It shows the force of the LORD’s action against the pride named in the verse.

mashchit: One who brings ruin or destruction.

מַשְׁחִית

This related form makes the destructive force within the root visible.

The elevation pride claims as protection becomes the very height that is brought low.

Swelling goes before breaking, and a breath lifted high goes before a stumbling.
Proverbs 16:18 · SDVPride’s rise carries the seed of its own collapse.
The lifted eyes of man shall be brought low, and the heights of men shall bow down, and the LORD alone shall be lifted high in that day.
Isaiah 2:11 · SDVHuman height is brought low while the LORD alone remains exalted.
But he gives greater favor. Therefore it says, God sets himself against those who lift themselves high, and gives favor to those made low.
James 4:6 · SDVPride meets God’s resistance, while humility receives favor.
A man's lifting up brings him low, but weight holds up the low in breath.
Proverbs 29:23 · SDV

The Hebrew word ⁨גָּאוֹן⁩ (ga’on, pride or exaltation) appears in both verses. Jeremiah says the LORD will ruin that high posture in Judah and Jerusalem; Proverbs names its collapse in the person who bears it. The shared word reveals the same movement from rising to being brought low.
