King James wording
King James Version
And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.THE KEY
Sheshach is Babylon concealed by a letter cipher, yet even this hidden ruler is made to drink.
THE MEANING
The cup reaches every throne, near and far; no kingdom on earth stands outside its scope. Sheshach (שֵׁשַׁךְ, Sheshach, the cipher-name for Babylon) drinks after the others, so the power at the end of the procession remains within the same reckoning.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that the power watching other kingdoms drink can remain untouched is undone: Sheshach drinks after them.
THE ROOT
יִשְׁתֶּה
yishteh
GROWS FROM
שתה
שתה (shatah): to drink, to take liquid in.
The verb יִשְׁתֶּה (yishteh, he will drink) belongs to שתה (shatah, drink), the root that also yields words for drinking itself and for a drinking feast. The kings do not merely encounter a verdict: they take the cup in.
ALSO GROWS
mishteh: A drinking feast or banquet
מִשְׁתֶּה
The same root can describe drinking gathered into a feast; here, the kings share a cup of judgment.
shtiyah: Drinking; the act of drinking
שְׁתִיָּה
This noun keeps attention on the act itself: the kings take the cup in rather than simply hear about it.
הַצָּפוֹן
hatsafon
GROWS FROM
צפן
צפן (tsafan): to hide, conceal, or store up.
The word for north, צָפוֹן (tsafon, north), is related to צָפַן (tsafan, hide or store up). That hiddenness resonates with the verse’s concealed imperial identity: the final ruler appears under a cipher-name.
ALSO GROWS
tsafun: Hidden or concealed
צָפוּן
This branch makes the root’s sense of hiddenness explicit, echoing the concealed identity at the end of the verse.
tsefunim: Hidden things or treasures
צְפוּנִים
The word for things stored out of sight shares the root’s consonants and deepens the verse’s pattern of concealment.
THE PATTERN
The cup of judgment moves through the nations until even the hidden ruling power drinks.
For thus says the LORD God of Israel to me, Take this cup of burning wine from my hand, and make all the nations, to whom I send you, drink it.For a cup is in the hand of the LORD, and the wine foams, full and mixed; he pours from it, but its dregs, all the wicked of the earth, drain and drink.Give back to her as she gave, and double to her double according to her works; in the cup she mixed, mix her a double.THE THREAD
How is Sheshach seized! How is the praise of all the earth seized! How has Babylon become an emptiness among the nations! The parallel lines place Sheshach and Babylon side by side, revealing the cipher’s identity. That makes the final drinker in Jeremiah 25:26 the imperial power itself, not an exception among the kingdoms.
