This verse in the King James

King James wording
I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me.

The Maker’s gift places the earth under another’s rule, and what is “meet” is what stands straight in the Maker’s sight.

The earth you inhabit, and the human and animal life upon it, belong to the Maker’s work. The same power that makes also places and assigns; possession begins as something received. What appears fit is measured by the Maker’s sight.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that power belongs inherently to whoever possesses the land dissolves here: its rule is given by the One who made it.

יָשַׁר

yashar

GROWS FROM

ישר

y-sh-r

To be straight, level, or right.

“is straight in my eyes” in this verse is yashar. The phrase is literally “was straight in my eyes.” The transfer is described as fitting the Maker’s sight, giving “meet” the image of alignment rather than mere preference.

ALSO GROWS

yashar: Straight, upright, or right.

יָשָׁר

This is the word behind what seems meet: what is fit appears straight in the Maker’s sight.

yesharim: Upright ones; those who are straight.

יְשָׁרִים

The same root links rightness to a way of standing, not just a judgment made from outside.

נָתַן

natan

GROWS FROM

נתן

n-t-n

Give, set, or place.

The word translated “given” carries the sense of giving, setting, and placing. Creation does not end with making: the Maker also places the earth under someone’s rule.

ALSO GROWS

mattanah: Gift.

מַתָּנָה

A gift is something received from another; the earth’s rule is presented as received, not self-originating.

natun: Given, set, or assigned.

נָתוּן

This form keeps the word’s sense of placement visible in the act of granting.

אָדָם

adam

GROWS FROM

אדם

a-d-m

The ground-being; the human named in relation to soil.

“man” in this verse is adam. The verse names the human as adam, a word-family linked with adamah, ground or soil. Humanity appears among the creatures on the earth with its very name carrying that connection to the ground.

ALSO GROWS

adamah: Ground, soil.

אֲדָמָה

The shared name-family ties the human in this verse to the ground on which the human and beast are found.

adom: Red.

אָדֹם

This related form preserves another earth-colored association within the same consonant family.

The Maker’s ownership precedes every human claim, and every allotment is received.

Genesis 2:7 · SDV

Jeremiah names the human as adam among the creatures on the earth; Genesis 2:7 places that same adam in relation to the dust of the adamah. The shared word-family links humanity’s place within the earth to its origin from the ground.
