This verse in the King James

King James wording
And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? saith the LORD.

God brings the ruler near, while the question turns on whether his heart has pledged itself to approach.

The verse shows authority rising from among the people it governs, while God draws its leader close. His heart is pledged to the approach, holding divine initiative and personal commitment together. The final question keeps the seriousness of that nearness in view.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Rank alone does not secure nearness: the ruler is brought close by God, and his heart is pledged to approach.

וְהִקְרַבְתִּיו

vehiqrabtiv

GROWS FROM

קרב

Q-R-B

Come near, approach, or bring near.

The same root appears in ⁨קֶרֶב⁩ (qerev, “midst” or “interior”) and ⁨קָרְבָּן⁩ (qorbān, “an offering brought near”). The verse joins a leader rising from within the people with God bringing him near.

ALSO GROWS

qerev: Midst; interior

קֶרֶב

The verse says the governor comes from their midst, using a word from the same root family as bringing near.

qorbān: An offering brought near

קָרְבָּן

It carries the same movement of approach that God initiates for the ruler.

לָגֶשֶׁת

lāgeshet

GROWS FROM

נגשׁ

N-G-Sh

Approach or draw near; in a causative form, bring near or present.

“draw near” in this verse is lāgeshet. The verse places this root after God’s act of bringing the ruler near: God draws him close, and he approaches. The Hebrew holds the two movements together without making them identical.

ALSO GROWS

vayiggash: He approached

וַיִּגַּשׁ

This form appears when someone comes forward, making the approach in Jeremiah a personal action rather than only a change of location.

higgish: He brought near or presented

הִגִּישׁ

The causative form shows that the same root can describe both approaching and bringing something forward.

עָרַב

ʿārav

GROWS FROM

ערב

ʿ-R-B

Become surety or pledge oneself.

“pledged” in this verse is ʿārav. The word translated “engaged” carries the sense of guaranteeing or pledging. The approach is therefore bound to the heart: the verse asks who has put that inner self forward as surety to come near.

ALSO GROWS

ʿārēv: A guarantor or surety

עָרֵב

It shows the binding force behind the ruler’s heart being pledged to approach.

ʿērāvon: A pledge or security

עֵרָבוֹן

It makes visible the idea of something put forward as a guarantee, which gives weight to the verse’s question about the heart.

Approach to God begins in divine invitation and is answered with a committed heart.

Flourishing is the man you choose and bring near, to lodge in your courts. We will be filled with the goodness of your house, your set-apart temple.
Psalm 65:4 · SDVGod chooses and causes a person to approach, and that nearness opens into dwelling with him.
Let us draw near with a true heart in the fullness of trust, our hearts sprinkled from a burdened shared sight, and our bodies bathed in clean waters.
Hebrews 10:22 · SDVThe approach is joined to the heart’s inward commitment and to what has been cleansed.
Flourishing is the man you choose and bring near, to lodge in your courts. We will be filled with the goodness of your house, your set-apart temple.
Psalm 65:4 · SDV

Psalm 65 uses the same ⁨ק־ר־ב⁩ (Q-R-B, “come near or bring near”) root as Jeremiah’s “I will cause him to draw near.” Jeremiah adds the pledged heart; Psalm shows the brought-near person dwelling in God’s courts and satisfied by his house.
