This verse in the King James

King James wording
Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:

Anger is named here, but it does not get the last verb: the same speaker turns from driving away to gathering and safe dwelling.

You are not defined by the place where you were driven out; the verse gives the scattered a way back into safety. The one who names the anger also gathers, brings back, and settles people securely, so return is more than arrival: it is the end of life under threat.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being driven away means you are permanently abandoned and can never be safe again.

מְקַבְּצָם

meqabbetsam

GROWS FROM

קבץ

gather, collect, assemble

“gather” in this verse is meqabbetsam. The Hebrew form means “gathering them,” presenting the action as underway. This root gathers scattered people into a collected group, so restoration here is reassembly, not merely arrival at a location.

ALSO GROWS

qibbets: gathered, assembled

קִבֵּץ

This form makes the root’s action concrete: separate people are brought together.

qibbuts: gathering, collection

קִבּוּץ

The noun names the gathered whole, echoing the passage’s movement from scattering to return.

הִדַּחְתִּים

hiddachtim

GROWS FROM

נדח

push away, drive out, cause to wander

“Driven” can sound like the people simply end up elsewhere; this verb names an active pushing away. Yet the verse keeps the same people in view through both driving away and gathering, making them the ones restored.

ALSO GROWS

niddach: one driven away, an outcast

נִדָּח

This form names the person living the condition described by the verb.

nidchei: the dispersed, the outcasts

נִדְחֵי

This form appears for the dispersed whom gathering reaches, showing that their condition can change without the people being lost from view.

לָבֶטַח

labetach

GROWS FROM

בטח

be secure, feel assured, trust

“where they can lean their full weight” in this verse is labetach. The root carries the sense of settled assurance, not only protection from immediate danger. The promise reaches its end when people can inhabit the place without living as though they are still under threat.

ALSO GROWS

batach: trust, feel secure

בָּטַח

The verb links safety with confidence and settled reliance.

mivtach: security, refuge, something trusted

מִבְטָח

This noun can name a source of security, underscoring that safety is an inhabited condition.

When God gathers the scattered, return culminates in a secure dwelling.

Then the LORD your God will turn back your captivity, and have compassion upon you, and will turn back and gather you from all the nations where the LORD your God has scattered you.
Deuteronomy 30:3 · SDVThe scattered are gathered back from the nations, and compassion accompanies their return.
The LORD builds Jerusalem; he gathers the driven-out of Israel.
Psalm 147:2 · SDVThe outcasts become the people gathered into a place being built up.
And not for that nation only, but that he would also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.
John 11:52 · SDVThose scattered abroad are gathered together in one.
And he will lift a banner for the nations, and gather in the driven ones of Israel, and gather the scattered of Judah from the four wings of the earth.
Isaiah 11:12 · SDV

Isaiah uses ⁨קבץ⁩ (q-b-ts, “gather”) for the gathering and ⁨נדח⁩ (n-d-ḥ, “drive away, disperse”) for the outcasts. The same roots show those driven or dispersed being gathered back from every direction.
