This verse in the King James

King James wording
Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

The hidden edge in “unto perfection” is an endpoint: the question is whether your search can reach the full limit of God.

You can search deeply and still not reach the Almighty’s full measure. The question marks the limit of what your searching can contain: God remains beyond the farthest edge your understanding can reach.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that enough searching can turn God into a fully knowable object.

הַחֲקֹר

haḥăqōr

GROWS FROM

חקר

To search out, investigate, or probe thoroughly.

English makes “searching” sound like ordinary inquiry, while ⁨חקר⁩ names probing investigation. The same root describes the LORD searching a person; here the question is whether that probing can reach the full measure of God.

ALSO GROWS

ḥăqartānî: You have searched me (Psalm 139:1).

חֲקַרְתָּנִי

The same root turns the direction around: human searching meets a limit, while the LORD searches the reader.

ḥăqarnûhā: We have searched it (Job 5:27).

חֲקַרְנוּהָ

The word describes inquiry carried through carefully, sharpening the question of whether even thorough searching can reach God’s extent.

תַּכְלִית

takhlit

GROWS FROM

כלה

To finish, complete, or come to an end.

⁨תכלית⁩ can mean an end, limit, or utmost extent. Here it places the question at the search’s endpoint: can you arrive at the full measure of the Almighty?

ALSO GROWS

takhlit: End, limit, or utmost extent.

תַּכְלִית

This is the word behind “unto perfection,” opening the image of a search reaching its farthest boundary.

kālāh: To finish, be completed, or come to an end.

כָּלָה

The shared root gives “perfection” the sense of completion and an endpoint, fitting the question about whether God can be fully reached.

The full measure of God lies beyond the farthest reach of human searching.

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness cannot be searched out.
Psalm 145:3 · SDVGod’s greatness has no boundary human searching can reach.
Have you not perceived? Have you not heard and responded? The God of the ages, the LORD, who created the edges of the earth, does not faint, nor tire; there is no searching of his discernment.
Isaiah 40:28 · SDVThe Creator’s understanding remains beyond the reach of searching.
O the depth of the riches of both wisdom and knowledge of God! How beyond searching out are his judgments, and how beyond tracking are his ways!
Romans 11:33 · SDVGod’s judgments and ways exceed what searching can uncover.
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, you probe me, and you perceive me.
Psalm 139:1 · SDV

The same root ⁨חקר⁩ (chaqar, to search out) appears with the direction reversed: here you ask whether you can search out God, while there the LORD has searched you. You cannot reach God’s full extent, yet you are fully known.
