This verse in the King James

King James wording
Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.

Job turns remembered sayings into ash and their supposed backbone into clay: words that sound weighty may have little strength to hold you.

This verse lets you see remembered sayings as ash when they have no substance, and the backs that support them as clay. Familiar words and a firm posture do not make counsel strong; what carries weight can bear the test of reality.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Repeated or inherited words are not automatically solid just because they are familiar or confidently held.

זִכְרֹנֵיכֶם

zikhronekhem

GROWS FROM

זכר

z-k-r

To remember, call to mind, or mention.

The root carries both remembering and mentioning, so these remembrances are not only stored thoughts but words brought to mind and spoken. Job calls those remembered sayings ash: recall alone does not give a saying substance.

ALSO GROWS

zakar: To remember, recall, or mention.

זָכַר

The act behind the “remembrances” shows that remembered words are being weighed here.

zikkaron: Remembrance or memorial.

זִכָּרוֹן

This noun form makes the link between what is remembered and what is kept as a memorial.

zeker: Remembrance, mention, or renown.

זֵכֶר

This branch shows that remembrance can become what is spoken of someone or something; Job questions whether such words have real weight.

What claims to be solid is exposed by what it can bear when tested.

The wicked are not so, but are like the chaff that the breath blows away.
Psalm 1:4 · SDVWhat appears to have substance proves as light and easily scattered as chaff.
And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not respond will be likened to a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
Matthew 7:26 · SDVA foundation is revealed by whether it can hold when the structure is tested.
Each one's work will be made visible, for the day will show it, because it is uncovered in fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is.
1 Corinthians 3:13 · SDVFire exposes the actual quality beneath what has been built.
Then those who stand in awe of the LORD spoke, each one to his neighbor, and the LORD bent his ear and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written before his face for those in awe of the LORD, who reckon his name.
Malachi 3:16 · SDV

Malachi uses the same Hebrew root ⁨זכר⁩ (z-k-r) in “book of remembrance.” The root holds both what is remembered and what becomes a memorial, while Job’s image asks whether remembered words have substance.
