King James wording
King James Version
But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you.THE KEY
The friends can return to the conversation, but their presence does not restore the wisdom missing from it.
THE MEANING
This verse gives language to a present encounter with counsel that returns yet brings no discernment. Showing up again does not make a person wise; the absence of wisdom remains visible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that familiarity or confident advice proves discernment. A person can remain present while wisdom is still absent.
THE ROOT
חָכָם
ḥākām
GROWS FROM
ח־כ־ם
ḥ-k-m
The root means to be wise or skillful; it can describe discernment as well as practical skill.
“wise” in this verse is ḥākām. This root reaches beyond a title or claim: it also describes wisdom as a capacity put to use. Job’s question makes the claim testable, does anyone among them actually discern well?
ALSO GROWS
ḥokmāh: Wisdom; skillful discernment.
חָכְמָה
This noun from the same root appears in Job 28:28, where wisdom is joined to awe of the LORD and turning from evil.
ḥakham-lev: Wise-hearted; skilled in craft, as of the makers in Exodus 31:6.
חֲכַם־לֵב
The same root describes practical skill, allowing wisdom to mean more than what someone says or claims: it can be seen in capable work.
THE PATTERN
Wisdom is recognized by the discernment and conduct it produces, not by a person’s presence or self-description.
And he says to humankind, "Look, awe of the LORD is wisdom, and to turn aside from evil is understanding."The head of wisdom is awe of the LORD. All who do his commandments have good insight. His praise stands for ages.Who among you is wise and knowing? Let him show his works from a good walk, in the tamed gentleness of wisdom.THE THREAD
And he says to humankind, "Look, awe of the LORD is wisdom, and to turn aside from evil is understanding."The word translated “wise” here and the word “wisdom” in Job 28:28 come from the same root. That verse gives wisdom a concrete shape, reverence and turning from evil, so Job’s judgment reaches beyond a sharp exchange to the question of whether anyone is discerning.
