King James wording
King James Version
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.THE KEY
The sons of God and the adversary take the same stand before the LORD: opposition is present within the scene, fully in view.
THE MEANING
The adversary comes among the sons of God and takes his stand before the LORD. Before any accusation or response is spoken, opposition is visible in the presence that frames the scene.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that opposition exists beyond the LORD’s notice: here the adversary stands openly before the LORD.
THE ROOT
לְהִתְיַצֵּב
lehit-yatzev
GROWS FROM
נצב
Stand, station oneself, take a position.
“to take his stand” in this verse is lehit-yatzev. The Hebrew uses this same verb for the sons of God and for the adversary. “Present themselves” therefore carries the sense of taking a stand: both enter the scene in the same posture before the LORD.
ALSO GROWS
nitzav: One standing; someone stationed or appointed.
נִצָּב
It echoes the verse’s picture of each figure taking a position in the assembly.
matzevah: A standing stone or pillar.
מַצֵּבָה
This branch preserves the root’s image of something set upright and made visible.
הַשָּׂטָן
ha-satan
GROWS FROM
שטן
Act as an adversary; oppose.
Here הַשָּׂטָן (ha-satan) means “the adversary.” Elsewhere the root names opposition as an action or role too, so the word carries the adversarial function alongside the figure who occupies it.
ALSO GROWS
satan: An adversary or opponent.
שָׂטָן
In 1 Kings 11:14, Hadad the Edomite is described as an adversary, showing the word can name a role in a conflict.
yishtenuni: They oppose me; they act as adversaries against me.
יִשְׂטְנוּנִי
In Psalm 109:4, the same root describes hostile action, making audible the opposition contained in the title here.
THE PATTERN
Scripture names opposition as an active adversarial presence whose activity is made visible in the scene.
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to take their stand before the LORD, and the Adversary came also among them. And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the messenger of the LORD, and the Adversary standing at his right hand to stand against him.THE THREAD
And Moses said to the people, Do not fear, take your stand, and see the deliverance of the LORD, which he will do for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again for the ages. The Hebrew behind “stand still” shares the root נצב (natsav, to stand or take a position) with Job’s “present themselves.” The shared verb makes the scene’s posture more than arrival: in Exodus, taking that stand is paired with seeing the LORD’s deliverance.
