King James wording
King James Version
He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it.THE KEY
The cloud is a veil God spreads over the throne he still holds, so what is hidden from sight is not absent or abandoned.
THE MEANING
The throne remains held even as its face is covered; concealment is part of what God does in the verse. When divine presence is hidden from your sight, the verse presents that hiddenness as still within God’s action and rule.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A throne hidden from view is an abandoned throne.
THE ROOT
מְאַחֵז
meʾaḥēz
GROWS FROM
אחז
ʾāḥaz
to grasp, seize, or hold fast
“grasps” in this verse is meʾaḥēz. The verb carries the concrete sense of grasping or holding fast. Its related noun אֲחֻזָּה (ʾăḥuzzāh, possession or holding) names what is held, so the covered throne remains in God’s grasp rather than slipping out of sight.
ALSO GROWS
ʾāḥaz: he grasped or held
אָחַז
In Genesis 25:26, a form of this verb describes Jacob’s hand taking hold of Esau’s heel; it sharpens “holdeth back” into a firm act of holding.
ʾăḥuzzāh: possession, holding, or estate
אֲחֻזָּה
Genesis 23:4 uses this noun for a possession; the branch shows that what is held can remain one’s own even while its face is concealed.
THE PATTERN
A cloud can conceal God’s presence while that presence remains active and sovereign.
And the weight of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days, and on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.Clouds and thick darkness are around him; alignment and judgment are the footing of his throne. While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast its shade over them, and they feared as they entered into the cloud.THE THREAD
And he said, You cannot see my face, for no man will see me and live.Job’s “face” and Exodus’s “my face” use the same Hebrew noun פָּנִים (pānîm, face or presence). Together they place the cloud at the boundary of what can be seen: the throne’s face is veiled, while God’s rule remains.
