This verse in the King James

King James wording
It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.

The Hebrew word for the onyx’s preciousness is also used of wisdom itself: the jewel bears the name of what it cannot measure.

Wisdom remains beyond the reach of even the rarest wealth. Gold and gemstones can be possessed and priced, but the wisdom this passage seeks is skillful discernment, not a commodity.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie this undoes is that enough wealth can secure or measure whatever is most valuable.

יָקָר

yaqar

GROWS FROM

י־ק־ר

y-q-r

To be costly, precious, or prized.

“weighty” in this verse is yaqar. The adjective describes the onyx as precious, and the same root describes wisdom as more precious than rubies in Proverbs 3:15. The jewel’s value is real, yet the passage places wisdom beyond its measure.

ALSO GROWS

yeqarah: Precious or costly; the feminine form of the adjective.

יְקָרָה

Proverbs 3:15 uses this form for wisdom, directly joining the root’s language of preciousness to the passage’s subject.

yaqar: Precious, costly, or highly valued.

יָקָר

Psalm 116:15 uses this word for the death of the LORD’s saints, showing that it can name a worth that is not a market price.

חָכְמָה

ḥokhmāh

GROWS FROM

ח־כ־ם

ḥ-k-m

To be wise or skillful.

The passage’s “it” is wisdom, a word whose root can describe skill as well as understanding. What gold cannot value is not merely stored information, but discernment with which life is handled skillfully.

ALSO GROWS

ḥākām: Wise or skillful.

חָכָם

The word can describe skilled artisans, as in Exodus 28:3, linking wisdom with capable work and practiced judgment.

ḥokhmāh: Wisdom or skillful understanding.

חָכְמָה

Job 28:12 asks where this wisdom may be found; verse 16 says even rare wealth cannot value it.

Wisdom and the life of God’s governance outrank material wealth so completely that wealth becomes something exchanged for them.

More longed for are they than gold, than much refined gold; sweeter than honey, and the dripping of the comb.
Psalm 19:10 · SDVThe words of the LORD are desired above gold, making wealth a lesser measure of what nourishes and guides life.
She is more precious than rubies, and nothing you long for can be made equal to her.
Proverbs 3:15 · SDVWisdom is named more precious than jewels, echoing Job’s claim that precious stones cannot measure her.
Again, the governance of the heavens is like a treasure hidden in a field, which, when a man has found, he hides; and in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Matthew 13:44 · SDVThe hidden treasure is so valuable that a person gives up every possession to obtain it.
She is more precious than rubies, and nothing you long for can be made equal to her.
Proverbs 3:15 · SDV

Job’s “precious onyx” uses ⁨יָקָר⁩ (yaqar), the same root Proverbs uses when it calls wisdom “more precious than rubies.” The shared word turns the jewel’s own language of value toward wisdom, while both verses place her beyond comparison.
